Honoring Veterans, Building Hives, Sharing Stories

We had the best time this past week with the help of JJ Baker and the Appalachian Heritage Bee Association. Together, we worked with the veterans at the Paul E. Patton Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center to build a foundation box for bees and we heard some of the best stories while we were at it.

So many of the guys were former beekeepers or just loved honey.
We’ll be heading back in a couple of weeks to paint the boxes with them, and they’re already excited.

One gentleman said, “I remember getting some apple trees off you one time at that building above the school.”
I told him yes I sometimes have workshops there.
He said, “Would you bring some trees back and plant with us?”
And I said, absolutely, I’ll work on that.

Moments like these remind me how blessed we are to serve the people who served us.

Note: The activity director told me that most activities only hold their attention for about 30 minutes before they get bored and head back to their rooms unless it is bingo.
We were there two and a half hours, and the majority of them stayed right with us the whole time, fully engaged. That meant the world to us.

It’s a busy time of the year and we are a day late posting for 2026 National Ag Day.

National Ag Day is a reminder of something we depend on every single day, whether we think about it or not… agriculture.

It’s more than just farming. It’s the food on our tables, the clothes on our backs, and the hard work of folks who get up before daylight and keep going long after the sun goes down.

Agriculture isn’t just important here in Kentucky it matters everywhere. It feeds our communities, supports our economy, and keeps our country moving forward.

Right here at home, we’re blessed with farmers, landowners, and conservation partners who take pride in caring for the land and providing for others. It’s not an easy job, but it’s one of the most important ones there is.

So today, and every day, we say thank you.

Thank you to the farmers.
Thank you to the producers.
Thank you to the ones who work the land and take care of it for the next generation.

If you ate today, thank a farmer.

🌼 Spring Clean‑Up Season is Here, Perry County! 🌼

We’re blessed to live in these beautiful mountains and hollers, and it’s the perfect time to work together to keep them clean. The Perry County Conservation District has trash grabbers and safety vests you can borrow, and trash bags are free for anyone doing a clean‑up.

And don’t forget, electronic recycling is available year‑round at the Perry County Maintenance Garage, so you can safely get rid of old electronics while you’re spring cleaning.

All we ask is that you snap a photo of your clean‑up and tag the Perry County Kentucky Conservation District so we can celebrate your efforts and encourage others to join in.

Let’s keep our county looking beautiful this spring 💚
