Hazel Crest Residents: Be Prepared for Tornado & Severe Weather Season.
Message of the Fire Chief:
April is recognized as Tornado and Severe Weather Safety Month, and it serves as an important reminder for all residents to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions. Severe storms, high winds, and tornadoes can develop quickly, often with little warning, making preparation critical to keeping you and your family safe.
Residents are encouraged to have an emergency kit readily available that includes essential items such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, medications, and a weather radio. These supplies can make a significant difference during extended power outages or when access to resources is limited.
It is also important for every household to develop and practice a family emergency plan. Identify a safe location in your home, such as a basement or an interior room on the lowest level, and ensure all family members know where to go during a tornado warning. Establish a communication plan so family members can stay in contact if separated.
Finally, be prepared for power outages by keeping devices charged, having backup lighting available, and avoiding the use of generators or grills indoors. Taking a few simple steps now can help ensure your safety and reduce stress during severe weather events.
