What’s Next for Hazel Green?
When I posted a few months ago about Hazel Green’s future, the response was overwhelming — over 150 reactions, 40+ comments, and nearly 100 shares. That shows something powerful: our community cares deeply about what happens next.
Since then, I’ve taken a closer look at the numbers.
At the 2020 Census, Hazel Green’s population was 4,105, with 1,516 housing units. Between 2020 and 2030, another 2,035 housing units have either already been built, under construction, or planned within the Hazel Green area. That’s an estimated 5,000 new residents — likely pushing our population to around 9,000–10,000 by 2030.
That’s 128% growth in just 10 years — making Hazel Green one of the fastest-growing communities in Alabama.
And it’s no surprise. Hazel Green was recently ranked the #1 Best Place in the Entire U.S. to Buy a Home by Niche.com, and is quickly becoming one of the most desirable suburbs of Huntsville, especially as the new U.S. Space Command relocation fuels even more growth across Madison County.
Yet despite all this progress, we remain unincorporated — no local government, no zoning authority, and no plan that we set for ourselves. Our future is currently shaped by outside cities, agencies, and the county commission, which does its best but can only do so much.
💡 The Good News: We Have a Choice!
Hazel Green can incorporate — establishing our own boundaries, local government, and community vision.
That means we could:
– Set zoning; control and manage growth before it controls us
– Preserve our small-town identity while planning smart, sustainable development
– Invest locally in our own roads, sidewalks, parks, and recreation
– Add amenities our community wants — playgrounds, greenways, civic spaces, even a true downtown area
– Keep tax dollars here to benefit Hazel Green directly
– Stay one step ahead of annexations and growth pressures from surrounding cities
👉 I’m forming a Hazel Green Community Action Group to explore incorporation, growth planning, and ways to protect our community’s identity as we move forward.
Neighbors, homeowners, and local business owners who care about Hazel Green’s future are invited to join.
