The Hazelwood City Council would like to recognize military veterans within our community. In addition to recognizing them at a Council meeting, we would also offer them a spot with the Mayor and City Council in the Florissant Veterans Day Parade on Sunday, November 8, 2026. Please include the following in your submission:

1. Your Name, Address, Email, and Phone Number
2. Name of Veteran, organization, or support person to be considered for an award
3. Relationship to the person/organization being considered
4. Branch of Service
5. Which Award (see list below)
6. Military Accomplishments or Support Accomplishments (just a few key career facts)
7. Community Accomplishments

• Veteran of the Year Award: An annual award recognizing a Veteran who has made significant contributions to the community or demonstrated exceptional service.
• Distinguished Service Award: For Veterans who have shown outstanding dedication in their military service or in their post-service activities, such as volunteering or community work.
• Lifetime Achievement Award: Honors a Veteran for their long-term commitment and contributions to both military service and civilian life.
• Community Hero Award: Given to a Veteran who has made notable contributions to local community projects or initiatives.
• Bravery Award: Acknowledges acts of bravery or heroism demonstrated by Veterans during their service or civilian life.
• Outstanding Leadership Award: For Veterans who have shown exceptional leadership skills, whether in military service or in their post-military endeavors.

This week’s Firehouse Friday features Firefighter/Paramedic Nick Sanchez!

Nick joined the Hazelwood Fire Department in May 2023 and is currently stationed at House 1 on B-Shift.

📚 Hazelwood School District families, please remember that there will be no school for students tomorrow, Friday, September 4, due to a Professional Development Day.

District schools will also be closed on Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day. Classes will resume on Tuesday, September 8.

🏅 Lifesaving Awards

During the September 2 City Council meeting, Hazelwood Police Officers Ashley Johnson and Blake Thornton were presented with Lifesaving Awards for their actions that helped save a life.

Both officers were joined by their families as the City recognized their quick response and dedication to serving our community.

During the September 2 City Council meeting, Mark Niehaus was recognized for his promotion to Assistant Fire Chief with the Hazelwood Fire Department.

After the Council Meeting | September 2, 2026
Here are a few highlights from last night’s Hazelwood City Council meeting:

🚒 Fire Department Promotions & Public Safety Recognition
The City recognized three members of the Hazelwood Fire Department on their recent promotions:
• Rob Peth – Deputy Fire Marshal
• Steve Welsh – Fire Marshal
• Mark Niehaus – Assistant Fire Chief

🏅 Lifesaving Awards
Hazelwood Police Officers Ashley Johnson and Blake Thornton were recognized with Lifesaving Awards for their actions in helping save a life. We thank both officers for their quick response and commitment to serving our community.

🚛 Missouri Bottom Road
Council gave first reading to two Special Land Use Permit requests for 12000 Missouri Bottom Road:
• Haulpro Leasing LLC – new truck sales and used truck storage/sales
• Missouri Trucking School LLC – vocational truck-driving school

⛽ 5901 & 5911 N. Lindbergh Boulevard
Council gave first reading to several items related to the proposed redevelopment of these properties, including consolidating the two lots, rezoning the property from I-2 Heavy Industrial to C-3 Highway Commercial, and a Special Land Use Permit for a convenience store with fuel dispensing.

💰 2026 Property Tax Rates
A public hearing was held on the City’s proposed 2026 property tax rates, followed by first reading of the ordinance. The proposed rates include the debt-service levy associated with the voter-approved bonds for the new firehouse. The annual sewer lateral fee remains unchanged at $10.

🚒 Fire Department Equipment
Council approved the purchase of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) equipment for the Fire Department at a cost of $48,988. This purchase completes the Department’s three-year SCBA replacement program and came in under the $60,000 budgeted amount.

🏗️ Fire Station #1 Bonds
Council gave first reading to an ordinance authorizing the issuance of $14 million in General Obligation Bonds for the replacement of Fire Station #1. The bond sale is scheduled for September 16, with final terms expected to come before Council that evening.

📋 Purchasing Procedures
Council gave first reading to amendments to the City’s purchasing procedures. The changes clarify the use of cooperative purchasing agreements while maintaining the City’s existing approval requirements and purchasing thresholds.

🏛️ City Hall Improvements
Council unanimously approved Bill 5238 as Ordinance 5118-26, authorizing a contract with DEKA Service for replacement of rooftop HVAC equipment at City Hall.
