***2ND ALARM FIRST DUE FIRE***

On Friday May 22nd at 1006 hours, Hazle Township companies were dispatched to 706 West Green Street for a report of a house on fire. Multiple callers reported smoke from the roof of the residence. Chief 1 arrived and confirmed a working fire with heavy smoke showing from a 2 ½ story duplex with possible entrapment. Engine 3 laid a supply line from Winters Ave. and Grapevine.

Engine 2, Engine 3, Truck 7, Truck 5, and Rescue 1 crews made an aggressive interior attack, holding the fire to the 2nd floor bathroom and 3rd floor. A second alarm was requested due to the heavy fire conditions faced by interior crews. Chief 1 (Kostician) held the West Green Street command. Mutual Aid companies were requested to cover the Fire South Region and handled calls in other municipalities.

This morning at 0557 hours 141 Truck 7 was dispatched to Main Street in Freeland Borough for a reported structure fire. 136 Chief arrived and confirmed a working fire. Crews arrived and assisted in fire suppression and overhaul operations. The fire reached two (2) alarms with additional manpower being requested to the scene.

Right after Luzerne County Communications dropped the Freeland Box 141/241 Stations were dispatched to the area of 924 Highway/Veteran's Road in Hazle Township for a motor vehicle accident rollover with injuries. Chief 141 arrived shortly after dispatch to find all occupants out of the vehicle and no need for Fire Department services.

Last evening, the Hazle Township Fire & Rescue Company proudly celebrated our 50th Anniversary at Sand Springs.

This milestone marks five decades of dedication, service, and commitment to protecting our community. We are grateful for all of our past and present members, families, supporters, and community partners who have helped make this achievement possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating this special occasion and to all those who have supported our company throughout the years.

We would like to extend out thanks to West Hazleton Fire Company, Freeland Fire Company, and McAdoo Fire Company for covering calls during the event.

During the month of April, two (2) of our volunteers successfully completed their Interior Firefighter training. Members, along with the Pennsylvania State Police, also participated in a Mock DUI Crash demonstration for students at Hazleton Area High School, highlighting the dangers and consequences of Driving Under the Influence and Distracted Driving.

Additionally, Tower 7 has returned to service after being out of service for approximately nine months. With its return, our station is once again back to its full complement of apparatus.

This morning members participated in a Mock DUI crash at the Hazleton Area High School. This program was put on by the Pennsylvania State Police with assistance from the High School Drama Club, and Lehigh Valley Health Network Medic 11. Special thanks to Paul’s Towing for assisting with the vehicle. We want to remind everyone the dangers of impaired driving.

****BACK TO BACK WORKING FIRES****

On Tuesday April 7th, 2026 at 1451 hours Luzerne County Communications Center began receiving rapid calls for the 200 Block of Allen Street in West Hazleton for a house fire. West Hazleton Chief arrived and found heavy fire from division two of a 2 story apartment building. Hazle Township and Hazleton City were requested by command and Truck 5 arrived as first due Truck. Crews assisted in search and overhaul operations. Command requested the 2nd alarm bringing Engine 2, Rescue 1, and the Fire Command for manpower.

This morning at 0517 hours Truck 5 was dispatched as part of the first alarm to Terrace Road in Butler Township on a house fire. Truck 5 arrived after Freeland Truck who found a working fire in a laundry room. Crews made a quick knock and all units cleared shorty after.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the members of the Pennsylvania State Police, the family and friends of Corporal O’Connor, and the members of the West Chester Fire Department following the tragic loss of Corporal O’Connor, who was shot and killed the other night.

Corporal O’Connor proudly served both as a Trooper with the Pennsylvania State Police and as a member of the West Chester Fire Department, dedicating his life to protecting and serving others.

We stand with our brothers and sisters of the Pennsylvania State Police and the West Chester Fire Department during this incredibly difficult time. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and fellow first responders as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.
