ANNIE LIEBOVITZ'S 'THE HIDEAWAY' a 65-acre agrarian sanctuary on the Marin County Coast in Bolinas, CA is an incredibly special property. https://www.bolinashideaway.com/about Offered at $8,995,000 "Tucked away in the serenity of Bolinas, California where the Pacific Ocean and Mt. Tamalpais meet, The Hideaway is an extraordinary coastal retreat. With breathtaking views of the Bolinas Lagoon, Stinson Beach and San Francisco, this iconic property features a rare combination of history, agricultural opportunities and an equestrian paradise. The Hideaway was the site of photographic interest for Ansel Adams in the 1930s and later became hallowed grounds for famed investor and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival founder Warren Hellman. Bountiful fields and terraces for sustainable agriculture, livestock stalls and vast pastures decorate the expansive property. An equestrian facility offers a picturesque riding arena next to a 7-stall barn w/ offices. The updated residential compound features a 1920's SFH w/ 4 beds, guest house, workshop, and 2 bed caretaker's residence. The adjacent hay and dairy barns have been transformed into a banquet hall w/ a performance stage and Hellman's famed recording studio. Surrounded by world-class coastal beauty, The Hideaway is moments away from amazing surfing, kayaking, hiking and wildlife preserves. Replete w/ lush rolling hills, sensational sunrises and sunsets, and sprawling vistas, this is a rare opportunity to own a piece of history." In 1960, David Latimer planted a tiny garden inside of a large glass bottle and sealed it shut. He opened the bottle 12 years later in 1972 to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self contained ecosystem has flourished for nearly 60 years.
For those who are wondering how this is even possible: the garden is a perfectly balanced and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost eats the dead plants and breaks down the oxygen that is released by the plants, turning it into carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. The bottle is essentially a microcosm of earth.
