Denali Borough's Neighbor To Neighbor program earned $3,750 in scholarships Monday for Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival classes, thanks to a new partnership this year. Festival matched dollar-for-dollar for every sign up on Monday, July 6.
Those scholarships will go to people who otherwise could not afford to take a Festival class. Check out options at www.fsaf.org and contact Amber Renshaw for details.

FAIRBANKS — Alaska’s Interior mayors and the Fairbanks Arts Association are taking nominations for the Mayors’ Awards for the Arts.

Join us Sunday for S'mores with John Kooistra, an Alaskan poet, commercial fisherman, and philosopher. A campfire begins at 6 pm, followed by a literary reading at 7 pm Sunday March 8 at the Murie Science and Learning Center (Winter Visitor Center) at Mile 1.4 of the Denali Park Road. Kooistra is a poet and essayist who has lived in Alaska since 1973 and Fairbanks since 1981. He’s taught philosophy at the University of Alaska, Purdue University, the College of Wooster, fished commercially in Cook Inlet for thirty years, and worked at various times as a tradesman. He’s traveled a lot by thumb, car, motorcycle and bicycle over the past fifty years, activities that have resulted in a lot of travel and journal writing. His poems are grounded in the world, in season and place, and go on from there to consider the timeless human nature we share.
