Charlotte Fire mourns the loss of two courageous firefighters—Battalion Chief Frank Harwood of Kootenai County Fire & Rescue and Battalion Chief John Morrison Jr. of the Coeur d'Alene Fire Department—who were tragically killed in the line of duty during an ambush while responding to a grass fire on Canfield Mountain in northern Idaho.

Chief Harwood, 42, and Chief Morrison, 52, were on scene Sunday afternoon when they were shot and killed in a targeted attack. Investigators later confirmed the fire was intentionally set to lure first responders. A third firefighter was injured and is recovering.

Both chiefs dedicated their lives to public service and embodied the leadership, courage, and selflessness that define the fire service. They responded to the call without hesitation—never expecting the danger that awaited them.

Our thoughts are with their families, their departments, and the entire northern Idaho community during this unimaginable time. We stand in solidarity with them and honor the lives, legacies, and ultimate sacrifice of Battalion Chief Frank Harwood and Battalion Chief John Morrison Jr.
