🌀 National Hurricane Preparedness Week – Day 5: During the Storm 🌀

When a hurricane is impacting our area, whether you’ve evacuated or are sheltering in place, situational awareness and quick decision-making are critical. Stay vigilant, monitor trusted alerts, and follow guidance from local officials.

🚨 Stay Safe from Water & Wind
- Get to high ground immediately if flooding or storm surge is a threat.
- Never drive through floodwaters or across damaged bridges—just 1 foot of water can sweep a vehicle away.
- If your home floods, move to higher levels. If necessary, get on the roof and call 911.
- Protect yourself from wind by sheltering in an interior room without windows, putting as many walls between you and the outside as possible.
- Use extra protection like helmets or mattresses if extreme winds threaten.

📱 Stay Alert
- Enable Wireless Emergency Alerts on your phone.
- Monitor official forecasts—storms can rapidly intensify or shift track, dramatically changing impacts.

🌍 Impacts Extend Beyond the Coast
- Hurricane hazards don’t stop at the shoreline—inland flooding can occur hundreds of miles away.
- Hidden road damage and rising water make travel extremely dangerous.

🚫 Travel Only If Ordered
- Evacuate immediately if directed and follow official routes—shortcuts can be blocked or unsafe.
- Watch for downed power lines, washed-out roads, and debris.

🌪️ Don’t Forget Tornado Risk
- Hurricanes can spawn fast-moving tornadoes, even far from the storm center.
- Have multiple ways to receive warnings so you can shelter quickly when needed.

✅ Bottom Line:- During the storm, your priorities are simple—stay informed, stay sheltered, and stay off the roads unless told otherwise.
- Your preparation today can save lives tomorrow.

🌀 National Hurricane Preparedness Week - Day 4: Get Moving When a Storm Threatens and Inland Flooding 🌀

When a hurricane or tropical storm is forecast to impact our area, time matters. Don’t wait—take action immediately to keep yourself, your family, and your community safe

🏠 Protect Your Home & Be Ready: When a storm is approaching, take quick steps to protect your property:
- Secure outdoor items
- Board up windows if needed and lock all doors
- Move vehicles to a safe place, and unplug electronics.
- If instructed, shut off utilities before leaving.

🐾 Know Where You’ll Go: Have a plan for where you’ll shelter—including options for pets. - Check the Department of Emergency Services page, the Northumberland County website, and monitor public information and warning systems for public shelter information (and have backup locations in mind).

🎒 Pack Your Go-Bag: Be ready to leave at a moment’s notice.
- Pack at least 3 days of supplies, medications, important documents, chargers, and essentials for your pets.
- Keep your phone charged and your vehicle fueled.

🤝 Help Others: Check on neighbors - especially seniors or those needing assistance and help them prepare or evacuate if needed.
- If you know of a vulnerable community member, please contact us.

🚗 Follow Evacuation Orders: Leave early if officials say to evacuate.
- Don’t wait for conditions to worsen, and never risk being trapped by severe weather.

🌧️ Inland Flooding Awareness: Flooding is one of the deadliest storm threats—even inland.
- Know your risk, watch water levels, and never drive through flooded roads
- Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.

🌀National Hurricane Preparedness Week – Day 3: Understanding Forecast Information & High Winds🌀

Today’s focus is on understanding hurricane forecast information and the dangers of high winds—because knowing what the forecast means can help you make life-saving decisions.

The National Weather Service provides a wide range of forecast tools that show a storm’s projected path, rainfall, wind speeds, and potential impacts days in advance. Taking time to understand this information NOW can make a big difference when a storm is approaching.

✅ Use trusted sources
- Stick with official forecasts from the National Hurricane Center, National Weather Service, and verified local meteorologists. They use advanced data from satellites, aircraft, and computer models to give the most accurate information. Follow trusted public safety and media sources for watches and warnings.

✅ Know the difference: Watch vs. Warning
• Watch: Conditions are possible—be prepared.
• Warning: Conditions are expected or happening—take action immediately.

✅ Understand the threat of high winds
- Hurricanes and even tropical storms can produce damaging winds that knock down trees, power lines, and cause structural damage—even far inland. Impacts can extend hundreds of miles from the coast and affect areas well away from where the storm makes landfall.

✅ Stay updated
- Forecasts can change quickly. Always check for the latest information and make sure your phone is set up to receive emergency alerts.

💡 Remember: It only takes ONE storm to make an impact. Take time today to learn how to read forecasts and prepare your family.

🔥 Increased Fire Danger Today🔥

Due to dry conditions, low humidity, and potential gusty winds, our area is currently experiencing an elevated risk of wildfires.

We’re asking everyone to take extra precautions:
✅ Avoid outdoor burning
✅ Fully extinguish and properly discard smoking materials
✅ Don’t park vehicles on dry grass
✅ Use caution with equipment that can produce sparks

Even a small spark can quickly turn into a dangerous fire under these conditions.

If you see smoke or fire, call 911 immediately.

✅ Assemble disaster supplies
- Stock up on essential items like food, water, batteries, phone chargers, a radio, and cash. Don’t wait until shelves are empty—prepare early.

✅ Review your insurance & document belongings
- Make sure your coverage is up to date and take time to document your possessions. Photos or videos can help speed up claims if needed.

✅ Create a communication plan
