BIG THANK YOU to the cadets with Thunderbird Challenge Viking Platoon and their leaders for their hard work and dedication to perking up the park this past weekend!

After camp was up on Friday morning, the cadets went to work on various tasks coordinated and supervised by volunteer Brent Perdue, the Operations Chair for Friends of Heavener Runestone, who camped overnight with the group.

The young men compassed the campground and day use areas dedicating time to clean up and clear out each camp site and picnic pavilion before shifting their attention to the Amphitheater in the late afternoon. Finally, the evening ended with an after-dinner bonfire to dispose of the remaining brush and trimmings.

Their tremendous work ethic, great attitude, and respectful presence is always welcomed and appreciated and is a clear reflection of the exemplary leaders who pour into these cadets. We are grateful for your time and service, and we look forward to the next campout!

If you have an organization, club, or group that is interested in volunteering at the park, let us know!

Local artist Anne Sue Wilcox recently completed this masterpiece after visiting the park. She drew inspiration from the large stone staircases that descend into the valley.

It perfectly captures the wonder and whimsy waiting to meet you along the trail.

Thank you for visiting and sharing this gorgeous vision with us, Anne!

We recently came across some great photos that were shared of the runestone and surrounding area before the park was established. According to Mr. Cathey, who posted the photos, these were taken by John Shuller who was the Scoutmaster of Troop 2 of the First Presbyterian Church of McAlester. John later became good friends with Gloria Farley who spearheaded the research and preservation efforts ultimately leading to the creation of our park.

Photos were reposted with permission from Mr. Cathey.

Heavener Runestone Park has been blessed with many great volunteers and it is these volunteers that keep things moving.

This young lady, Oyuki Valdez from Howe, OK, has visited the park often. Now a freshman at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith, she was recently tasked with identifying and researching a local challenge. Our park came to mind and she asked to write about the challenges we might encounter as a non-profit organization overseeing the park. Then she offered to spend her precious time today volunteering to handle some of the laborious tasks that stack up quickly.

We have also had assistance from a great volunteer who offered his time, skills, and equipment to remove several fallen trees along our hiking trails, keeping the trails open, safe, and enjoyable for hikers of all ages.

We are so grateful for all of the hard work, time, and energy that all of our volunteers have donated to our park and, by extension, our community.

Thank you all so much! 💚

If you are interested in applying your time, tools and talents to the maintenance and preservation of the Heavener Runestone Park, please complete the volunteer application on our website: www.heavenerrunestonepark.com under the FHR tab.

We recently had an internet inquiry regarding the presence of "peculiar iron-ferrite sandstone rock patterns" located within the park. Based on the information and examples provided, we scouted the exposed rock surfaces (mainly along the Runestone Trail) for anything that appeared similar to what was described. Here are photo examples of some of our findings. According to the inquiry, our park is one of only a handful of locations where these rock patterns are present.

The stonework along the Runestone Trail is one of the most complimented features of the park and is often assumed to be the work of the WPA or CCC. However, the trail was constructed in the early 1970s by a similar group called the Green Thumbs. I had the pleasure of speaking with a local gentleman who participated in this construction and remembered vividly how they quarried and transported much of the rock from near Lake Wister which is approximately 15 miles NW from the park.

Next time you hike the Runestone Trail, take a few moments and enjoy the diversity of geological formations found among the stones. If you've seen patterns and formations like this elsewhere, please let us know!
