On June 3, 2026, the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) received confirmation of a detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in Zavala County, Texas. The best thing that livestock producers and animal owners can do to prevent infestation is to put eyes on their animals as often as possible, remain vigilant by implementing enhanced management practices to avoid creating wounds, and promptly report suspicious wounds.

🥚🐣 A Cracking Good Start for Hebbronville High School ACE Students! 🐣🥚
County Extension Agent Phyllishia Lopez partnered with the ACE Program to bring the Egg to Chick Program (Hatching in the Classroom) to Hebbronville High School students, and this is Week 1 of an exciting learning experience! Today, students participated in a Parts of an Egg lesson, where they explored the different parts of an egg through a hands-on dissection activity. They also learned about the life cycle of a chick and gained a deeper understanding of how chicks develop before hatching. The learning continued as students were introduced to the incubator and learned about its parts and functions. Over the next few weeks, they will observe the incubation process and witness the incredible moment when chicks hatch right in the classroom! A huge thank you to the ACE Program and Mrs. Gonzalez for making this wonderful educational opportunity possible. We can't wait to follow their journey from egg to chick! Also a special thank you to Thirsty Cactus Ranch for donating the eggs without them none of this would be possible. 🐥✨
