UPDATE: Due to an extremely high response, we have closed applications for free spay/neuter services the week of August 3rd. If you didn't get an application in, please look into our spay/neuter voucher program below! Those who have submitted applications will receive a response by next week.

CARE's annual free spay/neuter event "Snip, Snip, Hooray!" is finally back! 🐾

Snip, Snip, Hooray! is an annual event where CARE partners with participating clinics across Arkansas to offer spay/neuter procedures to pets that otherwise couldn't afford them. Recipients receive a rabies vaccination (if needed), the sterilization surgery, and pain management for their pets. Owners will only be asked to provide a small deposit fee, which will be immediately refunded in full upon confirmation that their pet has been dropped off at the clinic for their scheduled surgery.

Applications are open now until July 29th (or until all surgery spots are filled). S/N procedures take place at participating clinics between August 3rd - 7th. This canine is now in the capable hands of the Humane Society of Heber Springs, AR.

🐢🚓 TRAFFIC ALERT: UNLICENSED REPTILE CAUSING ROADWAY DELAYS 🚓🐢

Earlier today, HSPD Animal Control responded to reports of a slow-moving obstruction in the roadway. Upon arrival, the suspect was identified as an adult female Eastern Box Turtle.

The turtle was observed traveling well below the posted speed limit and making no effort to yield to faster-moving traffic. When contacted, she immediately invoked her right to remain silent and retreated into her portable residence.

After a brief roadside investigation, it was determined that she was simply attempting to get to the other side and had no malicious intent. She was safely escorted away from the roadway and released in a suitable habitat to continue her journey.

No citations were issued, although a verbal warning was given regarding impeding traffic.

As a reminder, if you encounter a turtle crossing the road:
✅ Slow down and watch for traffic.
✅ If safe to do so, move the turtle in the direction it was already traveling.
✅ Never relocate turtles long distances from where they are found.

Today’s offender was safely removed from traffic and released without incident. We wish her the best of luck in her future travels—at her own pace.

🚨 ANIMAL CONTROL NOTICE 🚨

As temperatures begin to rise, HSPD Animal Control would like to remind citizens that confining an animal inside a vehicle when the outside temperature is 80°F or higher is ILLEGAL within the city limits.

Even with the windows cracked, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise to deadly levels within minutes. On an 80° day, the interior of a vehicle can quickly exceed 100°–120°, creating extremely dangerous conditions for pets.

Animals trapped in hot vehicles can suffer:
• Heat exhaustion
• Heat stroke
• Brain damage
• Organ failure
• Death

Signs of heat distress may include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, lethargy, unsteadiness, or collapse.

While leaving the air conditioner running is not a guarantee of safety, it is authorized to do so. However, vehicles can shut off unexpectedly, mechanical failures happen, and temperatures can become fatal in a very short amount of time.

If you cannot take your pet inside with you, consider leaving them safely at home.

Citizens observing an animal confined inside a vehicle during dangerous temperatures are encouraged to immediately contact local law enforcement or animal control.

🐾 Catch of the day! 🐾

This little chuckling definitely wasn’t afraid of its shadow — or the vehicles in the roadway. After safely securing the adventurous adolescent groundhog, we were able to successfully relocate it to a more suitable environment away from traffic and danger.

Another safe outcome for both wildlife and our community! 🚔🌿
