Cost: $5 per person. Children 5 and younger free

About the Program

Peek into the lives of those who would have lived or traded along the waterways of the Midwest more than 250 years ago when the marshes were a source of valuable furs desired by merchant traders to take back to Europe. Meet Native Americans, French-Canadian canoe men, called Voyageurs, British and French militia, early settlers, and many others.

This is a family friendly event with lots of fun and interactive activities for the kids. Visit the Children’s Trading Post to find out more.

We found a trail camera in the park that belonged to one of the hunters. The camera was returned, but not before I had a chance to look at the pictures. Amazingly the camera was operating during the beginning of the record flooding we experienced earlier this year.

The first picture is from Dec. 6, 2017. It shows a reference of the normal water levels during the hunting season in this particular unit. The rest are from February 21-March 3, 2017. Camera was located in the A unit of Gooselake. (Blind 20)

GKM 2018 Flooding

Another video of some drone footage of the flooding from about 3 weeks ago. Things aren't nearly as flooded now (although definitely not dry either!), but roads are passable, and things are improving.

Flooding Update 3/16/2018

-Clay street through the park is now open. Water still remains on a portion of the north bound lane so use caution.
-River level is currently 12.05 feet. Boating on the river during times of high water is highly discouraged.
-The main parking lot is still closed.
-Boat launch parking lot is open.
-Please do not park on the grass or on the side of the road.
-Most of the interior trails in the park are still underwater. Making them impassible.
-With all the water around make sure to bring your camera. Waterfowl numbers and species within the park are extremely high.

Flood Update 3/6/2018

Clay St through the park is still closed due to high standing water.

Kankakee River levels at Shelby are currently 13.08ft and slowly falling from a record crest of 13.3ft.

Parking lots in the park are currently flooded or closed for safety reasons. We will open the boat launch parking lot once the road is opened.

We are asking that no one attempt to launch at the boat launch until river levels have dropped to a safe level. Boat traffic on the river during high water events causes increased erosion on the river levee.

2/27/2018 Flooding Update

Rangeline road thru the park is currently flooded and the road and bridge have been closed.
