Fire extinguishers are a great tool to have in your home, but they need to be maintained to be ready when you need them. Fire extinguishers are usually good for about 12 years, but they need to be occasionally shaken up, or you can use a rubber mallet, to keep the powder from caking to the bottom. Also make sure that they are pressurized by looking at the gauge to see if it's still in the green area, and if it's not then it should be serviced or replaced.

Our thoughts are with the Baumgardner family today as Mark SR is laid to rest. As written in the post below “SR” leaves a legacy of helping others including this department and community. “SR” was one of the people that was an integral part of starting our ALS ambulance service back in 1999, and served as a part time FF/Paramedic for the following 13 years. Rest easy “SR”

We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Chief (retired) Mark Baumgardner, Sr., a 34-year member of Crown Point Fire-Rescue.

"Senior" served as Fire Chief and held many other roles from Firefighter-Paramedic to Division Chief of Operations and EMS. As a long-time educator, Chief Baumgardner launched and shaped the careers of countless EMS professionals in The Region.

Chief Baumgardner started his 38-year career with Independence Hill Volunteer Fire Department (Merrillville) in 1979 and was a member of the second-ever paramedic class in Lake County. He went on to become a member of Crown Rescue which eventually merged with the Crown Point Fire Department.

We will always remember him for his commitment to the department, our membership, and his family. Never one to turn down an assignment or a request for help, Mark was forever dedicated to the people in his life and the communities he served.

Chief Baumgardner is survived by his wife, 2 children, and 2 grandchildren. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Memorial services are being planned and an announcement will be made with details for those wishing to pay respects.

Installing and maintaining smoke alarms - NFPA

Smoke alarms are your best early warning system in the event of fire. Test alarms every month and replace batteries once a year, or whenever an alarm "chirps" to signal low battery power. Never "borrow" a smoke alarm's battery for another use - a disabled alarm can't save your life. Replace all alarms that are more than 10 years old.

https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education/Staying-safe/Safety-equipment/Smoke-alarms/Installing-and-maintaining-smoke-alarms

NFPA says installing your home smoke alarms correctly - and making sure they are in working order - is an important step to making your home and family safer from fire.

Over the past month, we had the opportunity to utilize donated cars from Paul's Auto Yard to demonstrate Extrication techniques. We were grateful for the donation of 4 different vehicles, we were able to set up for "real life scenarios" in a controlled environment for trainings. A huge thanks to our instructors, and Paul Palleson from BGFD for his help in assisting in instructing and providing some outside the box thinking.

The question has been asked about what rules apply to fireworks before and around the upcoming 4th holiday. Many jurisdictions follow the state guidelines, however may have odopted their own ordinance. The state guidelines are as follows:

- Consumer fireworks may not be purchased by persons under the age of eighteen (18) and cannot be in possession of a minor (under the age of 18) without an adult present.
- Consumer fireworks shall be used only upon the user's property; or the property of someone who has consented to the use of fireworks on the property; or a location authorized by special permit as a special discharge location designated by the state fire marshal.
-A person my utilize (use) consumer fireworks on the following days, without special permit:
- Between 9:00 am and 11:00 pm on all days.
(The following rules are protected and may not be restricted by local ordinance)
- Between 5:00 pm and two (2) hours after sunset on June 29, June 30, July 1, July 2 July 3, July 5, July 6, July 7, July 8, & July 9.
- Between the hours of 10:00 am and 12:00 midnight on July 4
- Between the hours of 10:00 am on December 31 and 1:00 am on January 1.

If fireworks are being used outside of these limitations we urge you to call 911 to report the violation with as much description as possible. We always want to insure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable Independence Day celebration.

On Nov. 9th, 2019, alledgedly between hrs. 3:30 am - 5:00 am, my 86 yr. old father, Zachariah Wayne Lee, Jr., D.O.B 06/29/33, gray hair, blue eyes, went missing from home. He suffers from Alzheimers, yet I still feel certain that foul play factored in to his missing; due to several red flags, & his disease was used as a diversion! My dad is my world, I love him DEEPLY, & I can only speak for myself of the DAILY pain I go through not having closure. Porter Co. Sheriff's Dept. & their Detective Spicer that was assigned my dad's Silver Alert, bothched his S&R, & gave no consideration to investigate my grave concerns of foul play. If you can in ANY way share this & possibly it bring MUCH NEEDED closure, I couldn't thank you enough.
