For those who may have been impacted in our local area by the recent storms, there are resources available:

IDHS' August Disaster Resource Hub is now available. The hub serves as a comprehensive resource center for individuals seeking state and federal assistance and updates related to the severe weather events that began on Aug. 11.

The hub also includes the application for the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF), specifically for Aug. 11 events. Impacted Hoosiers may qualify for emergency aid grants of up to $5,000. This fund is designed to help families secure essential items like clothing and uninsured medical devices while they are displaced from their homes.

Indiana 211 is accepting damage reports for Dearborn, Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Hamilton, Henry, Lake, LaPorte, Madison, Marshall, Morgan, Newton, Pike, Porter, Pulaski, Randolph, Tipton and Wayne counties for severe weather impacting these communities beginning Aug. 11.

To help establish a comprehensive assessment of damage, residents can call 866-211-9966 or visit the Indiana 211 website (on.in.gov/IN-211).

Collecting assessments via this process will help IDHS determine damage estimates and develop the next course of action in the disaster recovery process. 211 can also help residents connect to local resources to aid in response and recovery.

While our response area hasn’t been hit as hard as some of our neighboring communities, this is a great reminder to use generators safely!

First responders have been answering numerous calls for carbon monoxide alarms. In several cases, generator exhaust has made its way into homes, creating a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide.

Generator Safety Reminders:
• Always operate generators outdoors and well away from your home, garage, doors, windows, and vents.
• Never use a generator inside a home, garage, basement, shed, or other enclosed space.
• Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms.
• If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone outside into fresh air and call 911.

Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless, so you may not know there’s a problem until an alarm activates or someone becomes ill.

Please stay safe, look out for your neighbors, and use generators properly!

* Tornado Warning for...
Lake County in northwestern Indiana...

* Until 1130 AM CDT.

* At 1045 AM CDT, severe thunderstorms capable of producing both
tornadoes and extensive straight line wind damage were located over
Frankfort Square, or over Frankfort, moving east at 55 mph.

HAZARD...Tornado.

SOURCE...Radar indicated rotation.

IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without
shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed.
Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree
damage is likely.

* These dangerous storms will be near...
Munster and Dyer around 1055 AM CDT.
Schererville, Highland, Griffith, and St. John around 1100 AM CDT.
Merrillville and Crown Point around 1105 AM CDT.

Other locations in the path of this tornadic thunderstorm include
Hobart, Winfield and Lakes of the Four Seasons.
TAKE COVER NOW! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest
floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If you are outdoors, in a
mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter
and protect yourself from flying debris.

This cluster of thunderstorms is capable of producing tornadoes and
widespread significant wind damage. Do not wait to see or hear the
tornado. For your protection move to an interior room on the lowest
floor of a building.

ROAD CLOSURE: Beginning TOMORROW Tuesday August 4th. The Porter County Highway Department has announced the closure of W 100 S, which is the continuation of E. 109th Ave into Porter County for a roadway safety improvement project. This closure is expected to start on August 4th and be active through October 23rd. Please note that additional work will be occurring next year. Detour information is below. Last night, just before 9:00 PM, the Lakes of the Four Seasons Volunteer Fire Force was dispatched to the area of 8300 E. 109th Avenue for a reported water rescue involving a vehicle in a retention pond.

Due to the nature of the call, specialized dive teams from Crown Point Fire Rescue, Hobart Fire Department, and Merrillville Fire Department were automatically requested to respond at time of dispatch.

Upon arrival, our crews located a vehicle that was partially submerged with a single occupant still inside. Thanks to the quick actions of responding personnel, the driver was safely assisted out of the vehicle before the situation escalated. As a result, the responding dive teams were canceled while en route.

The occupant was medically evaluated at the scene and declined transport to the hospital. No suspected drugs or alcohol were involved.

The vehicle was safely recovered from the retention pond by Midnight Blue Towing, and the incident was cleared.

We would like to thank our mutual aid partners for their immediate response and Midnight Blue Towing for their assistance with the vehicle recovery.

🚗💧 A reminder to everyone: If your vehicle enters standing or deep water, remain calm and call 911 immediately. Fast-moving or deceptively deep water can create dangerous situations in seconds. We’re grateful this incident ended safely and that everyone involved went home unharmed.
