They operated the store until Hobart became ill and his sister, Ruby Beeckler, operated the store. It was purchased by Bill and Juanell Carson in 1992 and they are the current owners. There is a loft above the store that is said to have had a selection of caskets available for purchase. Many of the fixtures in the store are the original fixtures: the wooden floors, the tin ceiling and many of th
e display cases. Many have said that if you can't find something anywhere else you can find it at Moffitt's. Since 1992 it has been HWI, Do-It-Best Hardware and is now Handy Hardware. Moffitt Hardware has a wide selection of plumbing, electrical, tools, fencing, automotive, paint, hardware, and feed. Many traveling Highway 287 enjoy a leisurely step back in time as they browse this unique store. In the center of the store is a wood burning stove that in the winter serves as a gathering place to visit, reminisce and enjoy roasted peanuts. Many call on the wisdom of Mr. Carson to assist them with a variety of subjects. He has vast experience as he has worked for McDonald Auto Supply in Amarillo, Texas; Motor Inn Auto Supply in Borger, Texas; and owned Morton Lumber Company in Borger, Texas. After retiring from Morton Lumber Company in 1982 he enjoyed farming and ranching on the Tate Family Farm for 10 years. When Moffitt Hardware was about to be auctioned off he could not stand to see this hub of Hedley closed, so he and Juanell purchased the hardware store in 1992. The hardware store, a leather shop, and a convenience store on the highway are the only businesses in this little town.
