East Point Lighthouse East Point Lighthouse is a working lighthouse located on the mouth of the picturesque Maurice River on the Delaware Bay in southern New Jersey.

The Friends of East Point Lighthouse sharing photos, history, events and news about the East Point Lighthouse in Cumberland County, southern New Jersey on the Delaware Bay. This remote lighthouse is surrounded by natural beauty and has played an important part in the maritime history of the region. Originally known as the Maurice River Lighthouse, it was erected in 1849 by the United States Lighth

ouse Establishment. The present name was initiated in 1913. Throughout the years it's guiding light has shown fisherman, oystermen & recreational boaters the way into the mouth of the Maurice River. During daylight hours, it's bright red roof has been used through the years as a landmark by hunters, trappers & surveyors. At night it's blinking red light guides mariners on the Delaware Bay. Although numerous lighthouses once stood along the edge of the Delaware Bay, East Point is the last one remaining on the New Jersey side. In fact, it is the second oldest lighthouse still standing in New Jersey. Second only to Sandy Hook Lighthouse that was built in 1764. East Point Lighthouse is an active navigational aid with a flashing red light maintained by the US Coast Guard. The lantern room offers a panoramic view of the surrounding land and water making it a favorite subject for photographers & artists alike. The remote location, natural beauty & wildlife are a favorite for bird watchers as well. This page is managed by Nancy Patterson on behalf of East Point Lighthouse

This is very cool! Check this out ... how amazing would it be to have a Fresnel Lens back in the lantern room at East Point Light??? East Point's Fresnel lens is rumored to still be in the area ... anyone know where it's been safely hiding?

History!

When most people think of New Jersey, oysters probably aren't the first thing that comes to mind. But for generations, oysters were one of the state's most important industries.

Long before highways and shore tourism, the waters of the Delaware Bay supported thriving oyster beds that helped feed communities and build local economies.

By the late 1800s, South Jersey had become one of America's leading oyster-producing regions, with towns like Bivalve, Port Norris, and Shellpile built around the industry.

At its peak, thousands of workers harvested, shipped, packed, and processed oysters.

In fact...by the 1880s, Bivalve was sending more than 90 railcars of oysters each week to cities including Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago.

The industry was so important that New Jersey passed laws to protect oyster reefs as far back as 1719. By the early 1900s, packing houses lined the Bayshore and oyster boats filled local ports.

While disease, pollution, and overharvesting eventually brought an end to the industry's golden age, its legacy is still visible in towns like Bivalve, Port Norris, and Shellpile...and in the restored A.J. Meerwald, one of the last surviving oyster schooners from New Jersey's oyster empire
