URGENT SAFETY INFORMATION
This is an informative message regarding the extended forecast for potentially high/extreme temperatures in the coming days.
To all residents and visitors, the National
Weather Service is forecasting potentially high and dangerous temperatures and heat indexes starting tomorrow Friday, July 25th and continuing into the coming week. Projected temperatures/indexes could range between 100-115 degrees.
With temperatures like these, dehydration, heat stroke and passing out can occur quickly. Please ensure that you stay properly hydrated and allow opportunities to cool off regularly. If you plan to be outside for long periods attempt to do so in a shaded area as much as possible with plenty of fluids. Great examples are water, Powerade, Gatorade, BodyArmor etc. Also include meals or snacks to reduce the risk of blood sugar levels dropping.
Temperatures such as these can affect anyone but more so children, the elderly and anyone with extensive medical conditions ie: cardiac/respiratory issues, blood pressure issues, diabetes, and/or stroke history.
Also keep pets in mind. If you are hot, they are hot as well. Allow plenty of hydration and cooling breaks for them as well.
Keep in mind with temperatures like this surface temperatures such as concrete sidewalks, paved/graveled roads and other solid surfaces in direct sunlight can reach temperatures upwards of 150 degrees which can increase the risk for burns and nerve damage to unprotected extremities such as bare feet, fingers/hands, arms and legs as well as paws on pets. If you wouldn’t walk barefoot then they shouldn’t be expected to either.
With that being said, remember that non-running/non-ventilated vehicle temperatures can rise to extremely dangerous levels in a short amount of time. Remember to make sure children/adults and pets are out of the vehicle before closing and locking the doors. Due to the extreme heat being forecasted and minimal time a person or pet may have if left inside a vehicle not running or not ventilated, emergency personnel WILL NOT be easy with entering a vehicle if a person or pet is in distress. You WILL loose vehicle windows to ensure a rapid entry, removal and treatment of a person or pet.
Stay weather alert by monitoring local weather channels, apps or radio stations, stay cool and hydrated and watch out for one another. If you notice someone showing signs of a medical or heat related emergency say something or call 911.
Statement from the National Weather Service:
