Soaring cliffs and precipitous ledges mark the Belt Creek Canyon as it slices out of the Little Belt Mountains and winds toward the town of Belt. Remains of mines, a railroad, and historic cabins line Belt Creek as it makes its way through the beautiful canyon carved in limestone. This rugged area has seen its share of prospectors searching for precious metals, miners, muleskinners, smeltermen, and railroaders building bridges. The Barker mines and the Montana Central Railroad are just a part of the rich history of Sluice Boxes State Park.

Learn about Black-tailed Prairie Dogs at Greycliff Prairie Dog Town State Park. Park interpretive displays tell the story of these small, entertaining Prairie Dogs and their role in the prairie ecosystem. These creatures have great ecological significance because they create patches of habitat that provide prey, shelter, and forage for a diverse number of animals.

When you visit the park, please make sure that you enjoy the prairie dogs with your binoculars and cameras, but please do not feed them. The digestive tracts of wild animals are specifically adapted to natural foods; human foods can compromise their health and survival.

Get a glimpse of the past as you glide through the historic town of Elkhorn on cross-country skis. Once a booming silver mining town with upwards of 2,500 people and 1,500 working mules at the end of the 19th century. Elkhorn thrived even more when the Northern Pacific laid tracks in 1889, connecting it to the town of Boulder. This facilitated both passenger travel and the transport of ore away from the mine. The tracks were eventually removed in 1931, symbolizing the end of an era. Now a designated state park, Elkhorn also has around a dozen local residents still living amongst its epic history.

One of the most beautiful experiences you can have at Pictograph Cave State Park this time of year is witnessing the sunset from the park. The cliff walls catch the last sunlight and colors reach across the big sky. Even though the park is a mere five miles outside of Billings (the largest city in Montana), as you look over the hills, you may forget the proximity.
