🌾The grasslands of Montana, and the entire Northern Great Plains region of North America, are dotted with countless often-temporary wetlands. Collectively, these glacial depressions form one of North America’s most productive wildlife landscapes—the Prairie Pothole Region.

🦆Often called the continent’s “duck factory,” this is the breeding, nesting, and hatching habitat for over 60% of ducks in North America, as well as dozens of other species of migratory waterfowl, shorebirds, and songbirds.

🪿Now, however, an obscure federal review by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has placed the future of many thousands of those tiny wetland habitats in doubt.

📣Larry Berrin, Executive Director of Montana Audubon, says, “if you understand the importance of conservation, the importance of waterfowl habitat, wildlife habitat, and clean water then you know the value of these habitats. Please take advantage of this opportunity and make your voices heard.”

The Audubon Conservation Ranching team recently wrapped up our annual bird surveys on 21 Audubon certified ranches. From East Glacier to Ekalaka, we conducted approximately 51 point count surveys and documented well over 100 species of birds. 🐦‍⬛

Over the next few months, ACR Manager Jessica French will analyze the data, which will be used to support Audubon's "Bird-Friendliness Index,” a metric which measures the abundance, diversity and resilience of bird communities on Audubon Certified Ranches, to reveal habitat health and track biodiversity gains over time. We will also provide each ranch with a list of all the birds that have been documented on their enrolled acreage. 🏞️

Although survey season is a busy time, it is a wonderful opportunity to connect with our ranchers and to spend time on the habitat that they provide for grassland birds! 🌾

Thank you Congressman Ryan Zinke for your leadership on the America the Beautiful Act! We strongly support this legislation and appreciate your continued work to build on the success of the original Great American Outdoors Act and the Legacy Restoration Fund while honoring the original commitment to the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF). We are happy to see that this bill does not change or amend LWCF in any way, guaranteeing protection of permanent, dedicated funding. 🏔️

Executive Director, Larry Berrin said, "this will ensure our public lands remain healthy, accessible, and ecologically resilient while helping to improve the places that support birds, wildlife, outdoor recreation, and communities across Montana.” 🏕️
