I’m so blessed our local union was able to meet (mostly!) in person and hammer out a bunch of positive, brand creating, strong ideas! Our local union is a force!!

This is huge for union members across the state! PLEASE contact your legislatures, and give them your opinion of the following awful attempts to disband or gut our collective bargaining as a union:
Senate Bill 89
House Bill 168
House Bill 251
And if your blood needs to boil, listen to the opponents to House Bill 13, who state that public servants (you and I) are lounging around in our pajamas and running errands. They do not realize the struggle we are dealing with getting the state's work done, working remotely, and teaching our children (while we understand the teachers are overwhelmed). Use your voice, it's the strongest power we have!

This is so scary for all. It’s been shown time and again, from state to state, when the government starts mandating what unions can and can not do, all workers suffer, union or not...now is the time to make a stand!

Candidates didn't say much about labor law on the campaign trail, but a slate of bills and a public push show energy behind a perennial Republican priority.

Next up in our Get To Know Your Union Rep(s) series is our Vice President: Julie Weber McKenna !

1) What is your job title, location of the office you work out of, and length of time you’ve worked at the DOR/state of Montana?
I've been with the DOR (in Helena) for the past thirty-three years. I originally started with the DOR in 1985, and by 1998 I had become a Tax Examiner.
2) Where are you from? Lived in Montana your whole life? If not, what brought you to Montana and how long have you called it home?
I am a born and raised Montanan, I've lived here my whole life.
3) Why did you decide to join the union? What made you decide to be an active member of Local 4993?
I first became engaged with Local 4993 ten years ago when I was encouraged by other members to volunteer. I've always been a member, but feel my volunteering and participating in the local 4993 has given me many more tools to be a useful and informed employee.
4) What has/does your involvement with the union look like?
I've taken on various roles within Local 4993 over the years. Originally as Treasurer (for six years) and now as Vice President. Recently I've become involved in Member Organizing with, our parent union, MFPE. Additionally, I'm a board member for the Montana Public Employee Retirement board. which provides oversight and guidance to eight public employee retirement systems.
5) How do you spend your time away from the office?
When I'm not punching the clock from 7-4 for the DOR or volunteering for local 4993, you can find me on my mountain bike or cross country skiing!

Over the the next few weeks we will be spotlighting your union's leadership.. First up is the newly elected president: Zeth Stone

My name is Zeth Stone and I’m a commercial appraiser for PAD in the Bozeman field office. I have worked for the department for close to two and half years. Originally a native of Chattanooga, TN, I first came to Montana by way of a seasonal job at Big Sky Resort. After skiing 60 days in my first season, the rest they say is history.
Since becoming a steward for the Local 4993, I have tried my best to be as involved as much as I possibly can. During this time, I have led quarterly meetings (that included pizza!) with my local office to keep members up-to-date with the happenings of the union and encourage more involvement. Most recently, I’ve partnered with other stewards from around the state as a member of the collective bargaining team.
My goal as president is to increase membership participation across the state and to grow our numbers. This can only be done by encouraging you, our current members, to get more involved in your local shop and then statewide! I have been so fortunate to be a part of the Local 4993 community created by our current and former leadership and I believe it is possible to continue their momentum and make Revenue the best department to work for in the state!

The official “passing the torch”! Thank you, former President Mills, and way to go, President Stone! Our local is strong and will be a growing force, focusing on growth, equality and decent working conditions for all!!
