Mark Adams Award

The Lewis and Clark County Sheriffs Office Search and Rescue decided to change the name of member of the year in 2014. They renamed the award to reflect a man who gave outstanding performance to the Search And Rescue unit, Search and Rescue Captain Mark Adams. He was a long standing member who lead a leadership transition of S&R from a 501 c3 to a division of auxiliary deputies under direct supervision of the office of sheriff. He was appointed Captain by Sheriff Dutton. Mark was an instrumental driver of a new radio system that started in 2004.

It is unfortunate that Mark died in 2014.

The members of the S&R unit are asked to nominate someone who exemplifies service and commitment to the unit that Captain Adams demonstrated.

The award recipient for 2025 is Shawn Olson.

He received seven nominations for exemplary service above and beyond what is required from a Search & Rescue member. Shawn has mentored numerous new members, often reaching out prior to trainings and missions ensuring the newer members feel welcomed. He’s also been instrumental in the robotics team/evolution.

Shawn demonstrates leadership skills in all that he does.

Congratulations Shawn!

The following information is from Kathy Bushnell, United States Forest Service. (USFS) May 22, 2026

The US Forest Service has transitioned to a Type 3 organization for the Jericho Creek Fire (west of Helena Mt.) to get more resources in preparation of the opportunity to do a burnout operation over the weekend. The fire has not moved, some activity within the perimeter, we continue to build containment lines around it.

Updated information for May 24, 2026.

We are a Go for the burnout operations that will be done mostly by the UAS--so this afternoon, if you're around the area, you'll see a lot of smoke. Depending on how today goes we may continue firing operations tomorrow.

The whole area we're burning has containment lines and natural features as containment; a segment has a defined secondary line as well.

We have 80-ish people on the fire, some heavy equipment and a helicopter on standby.

Today the smoke will make this fire visible and since it's been quiet to-date people may think it's new--we are updating Facebook and Inciweb today too.
Thanks!
Kathy Bushnell, USFS.

We received the following message and it is worth sharing.

Just wanted to say how cool it was to see one of your deputies changing a tire at the intersection of York and Canyon Ferry this Friday morning. As a retired police officer from Missoula, we all try to go out of our way to assist in times such as these, but when the calls stack up, it's difficult to do what he did. Whoever that was, tell him the public is watching and appreciate the time he took to help a young woman with her tire. Chris Shermer
