We’ve all heard that buying land is a good investment because nobody is making any more of it. Today, in the face of rapidly expanding human development (and rising housing prices), that seems truer than ever. But all this begs us to ask, who is buying land for conservation? Land trusts or land...

As the new Montana Land Board finds their seats this week, the land trust community is reflecting on the great work done at the close of 2024 by Governor Greg Gianforte and the Land Board to get the first phase of Montana Great Outdoors Project over the finish line. We applaud their steadfast commitment to supporting conservation, outdoor recreation, local economies, and continuing the legacy of Montana’s open lands. Thank you for supporting this excellent project and for your work on behalf of all Montanans.

We look forward to working with the incoming Land Board in the new year to advance other great projects that will help conserve Montana’s wild and working lands now and for future generations.

This week, our Executive Director, Whitney Schwab, and Associate Director, Ben Horan, attended Land Trust Advocacy Days in Washington D.C. This great annual event, hosted by Land Trust Alliance, provides the opportunity to talk about conservation with our Congressional delegation and meet with agency staffers about their programs. This year, the Montana land trust community also advocated for the passage of the Farm Bill and the many programs it funds that are so important for Montana producers, families, and the conservation of the lands that support them.

Montana is fortunate to have amazing allies at home and in DC who understand the vital role that land trusts play in keeping trails open, cows grazing, and wildlife flourishing.

Thank you to Senator Steve Daines, Senator Jon Tester, Representative Ryan Zinke, and Representative Matt Rosendale, the staff of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Land Trust Alliance, the Montana Association of Land Trusts, and our friends at Gallatin Valley Land Trust and Bitter Root Land Trust for another great Advocacy Days!
