🚨 BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY REMINDER🚨

School is back in session, and the Helena Police Department wants to wish all of our students, parents, teachers, and school staff a safe and successful school year!

With the start of a new school year comes busy mornings, school buses, drop off lines, and more students walking and biking throughout our community. Keeping our kids safe is something we can all play a part in!

A few reminders as we head back to school:

🚗 Slow down in school zones and watch carefully for students crossing the street.

🚌Give school buses plenty of space and remember to follow all laws regarding stopped school buses.

🚸Watch for pedestrians and bicyclists, especially around schools and residential areas.

📵Stay focused while driving and avoid distractions when you are behind the wheel.

👀 Speak up if you see something concerning. If something doesn’t look right, don’t hesitate to notify school staff or contact law enforcement.

🏫Know the rules. A quick check of your school’s website can help keep everyone on the same page with schedules, procedures, and important updates.

🤝Know your resources. School staff, School Resource Officers, and the Helena Police Department are here to help support the students and their families.

And remember: school safety is a team sport. Parents, teachers, staff, drivers, and law enforcement all have a part to play.

From all of us at the Helena Police Department- welcome back, Helena!! 🎒📚🚔

Let’s make it a great (and safe) school year! 🍎

🚔 MYTH OR FACT? Traffic Law Edition (Part 2) 🚦

Ready for Round 2?

5️⃣ You can create your own turning lane when preparing to make a turn at an intersection.
❌ MYTH! Drivers must use the proper lane and cannot create their own turning lane.

6️⃣ When approaching a school bus in Helena with flashing red lights activated, traffic in both directions must stop unless separated by a divided roadway.
✅ FACT! Those flashing red lights mean stop and stay stopped until it is safe to proceed.

7️⃣ If you're stopped at a red light, it's okay to hold and use your cell phone.
🤔 MYTH! You cannot use a handheld electronic device while stopped at an intersection.

8️⃣ You must yield to pedestrians even if they cross mid-block outside a crosswalk.
❌ MYTH! Pedestrians crossing outside a crosswalk do not automatically have the right-of-way. That said, always use caution
and watch for pedestrians.

💬 Which one surprised you the most? Stay tuned for Part 3!

🦌 Wildlife Activity Increases in Late Summer

As summer begins winding down, it's common to see more wildlife moving through town. Deer, foxes, raccoons, skunks, and other animals are searching for food and preparing for the changing seasons.

Here's how you can help reduce unwanted wildlife encounters:
• Secure your garbage and keep lids tightly closed.
• Don't leave pet food outside overnight.
• Clean up fallen fruit from trees.
• Keep pets supervised, especially during dawn and dusk.
• Slow down while driving. Wildlife is often more active in the early morning and evening.

Most wildlife simply wants to pass through. Give animals plenty of space, never attempt to feed or handle them, and call Animal Control if you believe an animal is sick, injured, or posing a public safety concern.
