--FWP to host women’s BOW ice fishing workshop in Havre--

Reel in some fun and sharpen your skills with Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) Havre ice fishing workshop Feb. 13 and 14.

This two-part workshop is designed for women 18 and older who have never ice fished or who are looking to learn or improve basic skills and meet likeminded individuals. Participants will learn about gear selection, safety, and general techniques in a supportive environment. The program is divided into two sessions:

• Friday, Feb. 13 (6–8 p.m.): An engaging evening session on ice fishing essentials, including how to select and use gear, dress for conditions, and stay safe on the ice…all in a supportive and fun environment.
• Saturday, Feb. 14 (8 a.m. – 12 p.m.): Put your new knowledge to the test on a local frozen pond or lake (location to be determined based on ice and fishing conditions).

Registration & Requirements: The cost is $15, and registration is required. Sign-ups open at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, and close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

All fishing gear is provided, and no fishing license is needed during this workshop. However, a conservation license is needed for all individuals using Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks lands or access points. You can purchase a conservation license at stores selling licenses, at your local FWP office, or online at: https://fwp.mt.gov/buyandapply

BOW is a nationally recognized program and has been active in Montana since 1994. This program introduces women to different outdoor skills such as fishing, hunting, shooting, orienteering, kayaking and more. BOW provides participants with information, encouragement, and hands-on instruction.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks’ Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program is hosting a two-day ice fishing workshop in Kalispell on Feb. 6 and 7 for women interested in learning the basics of the sport.

The workshop is designed for beginners who want to learn gear selection, safety, and technique in a supportive environment.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn 'all things bears'!

September is Bear Aware Month!
Take a deep dive into the world of bears with hands-on bear aware BOW workshop. Immerse yourself in bear country and hunt down signs of one of Montana's most iconic species on this focused nature walk. You'll learn how to identify bear sign and some plants and animals that are part of a bear's diet. This workshop will include bear spray practice, safety tips, and plenty of time for discussion.

Your instructor Sabrina Bradford, PhD has over a decade of experience providing bear safety education and guiding visitors within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. In addition, Sabrina is the author of Grizzly Bear Foods: A Reference Guide to the Plants, Animals, and Fungi in the Montana Grizzly Bear's Diet which was published by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks in 2024.

Want to (girl) power-up your hobbies? Who is your favorite movie archer (and why is it Katniss from the Hunger Games)? Whatever your end goal, from interest in bow hunting, competitive shooting, or just a focused few hours of personal time, archery is an exciting skill to learn!

This class will follow the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) structure and safety protocols, teaching you in just a few hours to safely shoot a bow and arrow at a target. FWP will provide all equipment and cannot allow personal equipment use during this class.

This class is designed to teach archery to novices who have little-to-no experience with archery. Yet, revisiting archery fundamentals can be valuable for all skill levels, so all are welcome to sign up.

Class Details:
Date: Wednesday, July 16
Time: 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Location: Montana WILD, 2668 Broadwater Ave., Helena, MT
Equipment: This class will use compound bows and an indoor target range.
No recurve or distance arrows will be used.

Have you ever seen A River Runs Through It with Brad Pitt? Is shadow casting a real thing?

Not really, but fly fishing is one of the most iconic and popular sports in Montana and is an excellent way to get outdoors. Join Montana BOW for this incredible opportunity to learn the basics of fly fishing in Kalispell.

This class will cover the basics of fly fishing equipment, matching the hatch, reading water, where to fish, casting techniques, fishing regulations, catching fish, safety, and ethics. You do not need a fishing license for this class.

Class Details:
Saturday, June 21
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Class will break for lunch. Either bring a lunch to picnic in Snappy’s Courtyard (tables and shade), or plan to grab food nearby. There is a drinking fountain in Snappy’s to refill water bottles.
No fishing license needed
You are welcome to bring your own equipment or borrow ours

Join FWP’s Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program to learn basic backpacking essentials - from packing smart and choosing the right gear to staying safe and comfortable on the trail. Then, hit the trails with experienced instructors and a fun, noncompetitive group of peers to put your new skills to the test!

Class dates:

May 29 – Classroom pre-requisite: Backpacking essentials, MT WILD, Helena

June 6-8 – Backpacking trip (two nights, three days) in the greater Helena area

This class is designed for experienced hikers who are either brand new to backpacking or want to brush up on their basic backpacking skills.
