In Montana, 90% of our libraries are classified as “small”, serving a population of less than 25,000. And at least 70% of our libraries are considered “remote” from a population center. No surprise, huh? But what do these facts tell you about the importance of these community assets?

Did you know that Montana librarians answer more than 470,000 research questions each year? Topics range from hunting regulations, to homework assistance, to job applications and resumes. That’s an average of over 1,280 questions answered a day by Montana librarians! Superheroes? We think so.

One of the first chief librarians of the public library in Dillon was Mrs. Ho**er, the grandniece of author Harriet Beecher Stowe. This beautiful Romanesque Revival structure (below) that is now the Dillon City Library was designed by architect C.S. Haire and was completed in 1902. Out of seventeen Carnegie libraries that were originally built in Montana, fifteen are still standing and nine of those still function as libraries.

Both C.S. Haire and his partner John G. Link will be inducted into the Gallery of Outstanding Montanans tomorrow, February 27th, at 1:00 in the Capitol Rotunda. Join us!

“With audio books from the state’s Talking Book Library, I taught myself to program our website and get our business off the ground five years ago. We work with individuals, schools and organizations to help blind and low vision persons achieve their potential in the community or in the workplace.”
