This weekend, as you prepare to move your clocks BEHIND one hour (contrary to the popular memes floating around Facebook), take ten minutes to replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. This simple task can save you and your family. Remember, smoke detectors older than ten years should be changed out for newer ones. Carbon monoxide detectors have a seven to ten year shelf life (depending on the brand). Be safe and enjoy the weekend!

The theme for fire prevention month this year is “Lithium-Ion Batteries”. The pictures you’re seeing are the real result of a lithium-ion battery fire. The individual who donated this thought we could use it to educate the public. The battery was a cheap knock off from Amazon. The owner was in the process of charging the battery when he heard a noise and smelled smoke. He was able to get the battery off of the charger and bring it outside where it caught fire then ultimately exploded. He gave us both the charred battery and the “good” battery for comparison.

Some helpful things to remember when buying batteries, always make sure they are name brand and are UL certified. In the event of a fire or an odor of smoke, call 9-1-1 immediately and evacuate the area. Give the dispatcher any and all information and DO NOT hang up until instructed to do so. Stay safe, neighbors and just know, your firefighters are here to serve you!

Having a plan in place for incidents helps emergency responders serve their communities better. Training is also considered planning. With this is mind; last night, your firefighters invited Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Company #1 - Station 51, Spotswood Volunteer Fire Department - Enterprise Hook & Ladder Co., Inc., and Jamesburg Fire Department to come and train with us. Each department brought their ladder trucks which were different sizes as well as styles. The objective was to see the reach of each truck. The buildings used were the Lofts At Helmetta buildings (across from our fire house). Thank you again to our mutual aid partners as well as the management team from the Lofts At Helmetta.

October is not only Breast Cancer Awareness month but it’s also Fire Prevention week. This year, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) chose the topic of lithium-ion batteries and the dangers they could pose. For more information on Fire Prevention week, visit FPW.org.

This past weekend, members of the Helmetta Fire Department were in attendance for Helmetta Day. We celebrated Helmetta, the town we love and serve. Mayor Chris Slavicek (as always) did an amazing job in making sure that the celebration was fun for all in attendance!

On Monday night, members of the department trained on quick deployment and advancing a hose line. Chief Joe Reid and Deputy Chief Rob Simonelli provided helpful knowledge to which benefits firefighters. If you saw our trucks on John Street, just know that we were training to keep our skills refreshed to better serve you!

If you’re interested in serving your community, do not hesitate to visit the fire house for a tour and to learn more about what we do. We are at the fire house on Monday nights around 7pm. Come join us and our family atmosphere!

On this day twenty-four years ago, our country was the victim of a foreign terrorist attack. 2,977 people never made it home from The World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and United Flight 93; which crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In New York, 343 New York City Firefighters, 23 New York City Police Officers, 37 Port Authority Police Officers, 1 Member of the New York Fire Patrol, and 8 EMTs and Paramedics from private companies all made the ultimate sacrifice.
