The Helper Museum is located in the small town of Helper, Utah. Helper is named for the engines required to help the trains climb the steep grades to Soldier Summit toward Salt Lake City. The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad established the town when the railroad came through the area, and coal that was needed to fuel the steam engines was found nearby. By 1891, a rail depot, a roundhouse, and a hot

el were built and the town was founded. As more coal mines were opened in the surrounding area, Helper became the railroad center and commercial hub for coal miners and their families who lived in the many mining camps and company towns in Carbon County. Helper’s Mining & Railroad Museum tells the story of life in the coal camps and the European and Asian immigrants who helped build the area.

Art may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of The Helper Museum, but we have a wonderful and wide-ranging collection.
We just received a new addition. This painting of Castle Gate by Betty Guyman shows the Castle Gate landmark when it had two sides. It is a great companion to the Gary Ernest Smith painting donated by Helper Project, which shows a one-sided Castle Gate. Betty has an artistic ancestry. Lynn Fausett is one of the most prominent painters to come from Carbon County and his work is featured in our WPA art gallery. Betty would like to dedicate her painting to the memory of her father, Grant Fausett.

Great Job Isabel your work is greatly appreciated.
