How does a Democrat win in Utah? In 2017, they harness a political realignment happening right now.
Look around at what's happening. The British General Election ended in Labour gains because millennials came out and voted. Bernie Sanders has changed our political landscape because millennials showed up. What else can we do when millennials get involved?
Back here in Utah, The Salt Lake Tribune has discovered Mormon millennials are split between Democrats and the GOP. 46% GOP, 41% Democratic. The Tribune also discovered Mormon millennials are more diverse and more balanced.
What this trend shows us is Utah, that unwaveringly staunch Republican fortress, is up for grabs in 2017. This campaign can win by reaching out to younger voters in 2017. Special elections and midterm elections always have lower voter turnout, but by energizing a younger demographic, Democrats can win in Utah’s CD3. We believe this campaign is best equipped to reach out to that demographic and make a meaningful connection with voters. What millennials want is one of their own in Congress, representing their voices. They don’t want the older generation giving them their diagnosis for the world’s ills, they want someone who looks like, thinks like, and votes like they do. Let’s give them that and put Carl on the ballot in November.
