As we move into the close of National Police Week, I want to take a moment to remember all of those men and women who have sacrificed their lives while protecting their individual communities. To the families of those who have lost their loved ones, I want you to always remember that their legacy will continue to move on through each and every one of us as we continue our pursuit to protect our individual communities.

I also want to express my sincere appreciation to those who continue to serve their communities in our neighboring agencies. Price City Police Department, Carbon County Sheriff's Office Utah, Wellington Police, East Carbon Police Department, Utah Highway Patrol, Utah Department of Corrections, and Utah Department of Natural Resources.

Lastly, I want to specifically thank our department members, Officer Chris Shaw, Officer Lara Olson, Officer Garrett Newman, and Officer Valdiviezo. Thank you to each of your dedication to the Helper community and your continued support to create a safer and better environment for us all.

Flat Stanley officially joined the Helper City Police Department as our newest police cadet! He toured the department, met Secretary Jaylee Adderley, learned about evidence handling, and even tried (unsuccessfully) to defect to the fire department for their fancy tools and donut breaks.
Cadet Stanley later hit the streets with Officer Chris Shaw, where he observed a traffic stop, helped issue a speeding ticket on 100 West, and even assisted with a theft call that ended in an arrest. By the end of his shift, Stanley learned that law enforcement is about accountability, community safety — and a whole lot of paperwork!
Cadet Stanley thanks the Helper Police Department for a fun and busy day and hopes to see the officers in the library soon!

Update regarding the trailer fire on January 14, 2026.

After concluding with the incident, the body of the deceased male was transported to the Medical Examiner's Office in Taylorsville where the male was positively identified as Rudy Draper, a 73-year-old male, and a local to the Helper area. The State Fire Marshall's Office assessed the scene and believe the fire had originated from the furnace within the trailer. There is no foul play believed to have occurred during this incident.

We again want to express our sincerest condolences to the family of Rudy during this trying time. Thank you all for your patience and no further information regarding the incident will be released by this department.

With today being Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, I would just like to publicly say thank you to the officers at the Helper City Police Department for everything they do.

Those officers consist of Officer Chris Shaw, Officer Lara Olson, Officer Garrett Newman, and Officer Drake Valdiviezo.

Without their hard work and dedication to this department and this community, we would not be as successful as we have been. They each have been a vital asset to this department and I am excited to see their continued successes within each of their individual careers.

Additionally, I would like to say thank you to the local agencies and their Officers, Deputies, Agents, and Troopers for always being there for our department, lending a helping hand, and ensuring our department's safety along with the safety of our community.
