Happy National Watermelon Day!

Did you know, Hempstead, Texas is known as the Watermelon Capital of Texas thanks to its rich farming history and ideal growing conditions. In the early 1900s, it became one of the largest shippers of watermelons in the country, sending sweet Texas melons across the nation. The town embraced the title with pride, celebrating each summer with the Hempstead Watermelon Festival—complete with seed-spitting contests, parades, a Watermelon Queen, and plenty of fresh watermelon. This long-standing tradition has made Hempstead a symbol of Texas watermelon pride.

🍉 Every summer in Hempstead, Texas, the Brazos River bottomland does something that the surrounding sandy uplands cannot — it grows watermelons of such size, such sweetness, and such deep crimson flesh that the town has been calling itself the Watermelon Capital of Texas for over a century and nobody from Waller County has ever thought to argue with the designation. On a July Saturday morning at the Hempstead market, the evidence is overwhelming and delicious. 🤠✨
Hempstead's watermelon reputation is rooted in the specific agricultural conditions of the Brazos River bottomland in Waller County — the deep, rich alluvial soils deposited by centuries of river flooding produce a growing environment of exceptional fertility that the watermelon varieties favored by Waller County farmers — Tom Watson, Crimson Sweet, and their local selections — exploit to produce melons of extraordinary size and flavor. The combination of Brazos bottomland soil, the intense Coastal Prairie summer heat, and the long growing season produces a watermelon that commercial growers from other regions have repeatedly tried and repeatedly failed to replicate under different conditions, making the Hempstead watermelon as geographically specific as a French wine appellation and as stubbornly local as anything Texas agriculture produces. The annual Hempstead Watermelon Festival continues today as one of the most beloved summer agricultural celebrations in Southeast Texas.
🌱 Have you ever stopped at the Hempstead watermelon market on a summer road trip, or does your family have a Waller County watermelon tradition?
