IPAWS Emergency Alert System and Wireless Emergency Alerts Will be Tested Tomorrow August 11 at 2:20 pm EDT.
This is the sixth national Emergency Alert System test and the second national Wireless Emergency Alert test. This time, however, the WEA portion of the test will be directed only to those cellphones where the subscriber has opted-in to receive WEA Test messages.
On AUG 11, at approximately 11:20am PDT, FEMA and the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) will test both the Emergency Alert System (EAS) over radio and TV and the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on cellular phones where the subscriber has opted in for testing. More detailed information on this upcoming test is available at https://www.fema.gov/press-release/20210611/fema-and-fcc-plan-nationwide-emergency-alert-test-aug-11-test-messages-will
This week’s testing will be the sixth test of the nationwide public alert and warning systems and has been planned since June 2020. The purpose of the test is to assess the effectiveness of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to receive and convey a national message via radio and television, and of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) infrastructure to deliver a test message to mobile phones.
Did you know you can adjust what emergency alerts come over your phone? On your iPhone, if you go to “Settings” then select “Notifications” and scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see a section called “Government Alerts”. This is where you opt in for emergency alerts. These alerts are designed to send emergency public information to your phone based on your actual physical location not on where you live. So if you are taking a trip and a WEA comes out where you have traveled to, you will get the alert (given you have opted in for the alerts). If you are interested in receiving the test alerts like the one coming up on AUG 11th, please follow the directions provided in this IPAWS Tip for May 2020 (fema.gov).
FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission, will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) this summer.
