Update:

May 28, 2026: At approximately 7:45 p.m., officers with the Henderson Police Department’s Operations Division located and arrested Jamari Speed, 18, of Vance County, for the homicide of 76-year-old Willie Satterfield, which occurred on Saturday, May 9, 2026 on Lamb Street (North Henderson)

The Henderson Police Department’s Investigation Division has worked diligently throughout this investigation to identify and apprehend the individual(s) responsible for this heinous act. We greatly appreciate the cooperation and assistance provided by members of our community during this investigation.

Speed will be held without bond pending future court proceedings.
This investigation remains active and ongoing.

This morning, members of the Henderson community gathered in support of the North Carolina Special Olympics during the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Former participants joined representatives from the Henderson Police Department, Vance County Sheriff’s Office, NC Department of Adult Corrections, NC State Bureau of Investigation, NC State Highway Patrol, District Attorney’s Office, and Henderson-Vance Recreation and Parks to show their continued support for Special Olympics athletes and the mission they represent.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run continues to serve as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when public safety agencies and community partners come together for a common cause.

A special thank you to Mayor Melissa Elliott, who greeted participants and offered words of encouragement at the finish line.

The Henderson Police Department appreciates everyone who participated, supported, and helped make this year’s event a success.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. this morning, a bear was seen in the rear parking area of Maria Parham Health. The hospital’s onsite security team quickly contacted 911, and Vance County Animal Services responded to the area.

At this time, the bear has not been located. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission has also been notified and is aware of the sighting.

For public safety purposes, residents are reminded that if you see the animal, do not approach it. Please keep a safe distance and contact 911 or local authorities immediately.

The Vance County Teen Court Club relies on student volunteers to provide an alternative system of justice which encourages youth to take responsibility for their actions and correct their mistakes. The youth offender is defended and prosecuted by their peers. Sanctions include restitution, community service, and counseling. 👩‍⚖️

On May 19, 2026, at approximately 7:40 a.m., officers with the Henderson Police Department responded to 197 Parham Road, the location of the former 121 Motel, in reference to a breaking and entering in progress.

Shortly after arrival, officers located 44-year-old Kevin Thomas Clayton, of Durham, inside one of the rooms purportedly attempting to steal materials from the structure. During the investigation, officers also conducted a search at the Budget Host Inn, located at 1727 N. Garnett Street, where Clayton was reportedly residing. Tools, commonly used to burglarize and steal where located in his possession.

Clayton was charged with:
• Felony Breaking and Entering
• Felony Injury to Property to Obtain Non-Ferrous Metal
• Felony Possession of Burglary Tools

Clayton received a $50,000 secured bond and was remanded to the Vance County Detention Center.

He is scheduled to appear in Vance County District Court on June 16, 2026.

On May 14, 2026, following a prolonged joint operation, the Henderson Police Department, Nash County Sheriff’s Office, Vance County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms, and Explosives (ATF) executed a search warrant at 310 Little Mill Road in Vance County, resulting in an arrest and the seizure of a large quantity of narcotics.

During the ex*****on of the search warrant Investigators and Agents located and seized eight hundred fifty (850) dosage units of He**in, eighty-four (84) grams of fentanyl M30 pills, one (1) semi-automatic rifle, $5,100.00 in U.S Currency, and other drug manufacturing items.

Arrestee: Ta’Shawn Ty’Quaill Baskerville, 310 Little Mill Road Henderson, North Carolina, 27537

Charges:
(2) Trafficking He**in
(2) Trafficking Fentanyl
(1) Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell, Deliver He**in

(1) Possession of Firearm by Convicted Felon

Baskerville was held under no bond and remanded to Vance County Detention Center, where he will remain, pending future court hearings at the state/federal level.
