Today, we say goodbye to retired Assistant Chief Ronnie Lassiter. Chief Lassiter retired from Henderson Fire Dept many years ago and served the community since 1969. Please keep his family and friends in your prayers.

Please be mindful of school bus safety as many students begin to get back to school!

The 2026-27 school year is already underway in many North Carolina school districts, with many more welcoming students back over the next two weeks. That means the big yellow buses are back on the roads!

Leave yourself a little extra time, be patient and stay alert around school buses and bus stops.

Did you know passing a stopped school bus can result in a $500 fine and five points on your driver’s license? If a driver strikes a child, this becomes a felony.

Former Mayor Eddie Ellington was honored today in the dedication of the Garnett St./Charles St. water fountains. Eddie has served in this community for many years and has been a great asset to the City of Henderson. We thank you for your service!

Today, August 12th, the City of Henderson recognized Sara Coffey and dedicated the Purple Heart flag pole in her honor. Sara worked really hard in getting Henderson recognized as a Purple Heart City and she herself was responsible for getting this flag pole placed in front of the police department on Breckenridge Street. Sara has served previously on the City Council for many years, served in the military and also law enforcement. Also there by the pole, is the Vance County Veterans Memorial. If you have not visited yet to see this beautiful monument, please take the time to go visit. It is truly beautiful and we are so fortunate to have it.

Today, we celebrate positive progress and recognize the dedication of the men and women of the Henderson Police Department. The recent crime trend dashboard reflects significant reductions in crime throughout our city, including an overall crime decrease of nearly 19%, a reduction in violent crime, aggravated assaults, and other offenses.
These numbers represent more than statistics — they represent safer neighborhoods, families protected, and the continued commitment of those who serve our community every day.
I want to personally thank Chief Marcus Barrow and the entire Henderson Police Department for their professionalism, sacrifice, and tireless work to keep our residents safe. Your commitment to proactive policing, community partnerships, and protecting the citizens of Henderson does not go unnoticed.
Public safety is a shared responsibility, and these results show what can happen when dedicated law enforcement officers, community leaders, and residents work together toward a common goal.
