👀If you saw a big cloud of smoke last Saturday and wondered what was going on 🤨. Don’t worry it was just us 🚒🧯🔥doing some training.

Last weekend your Epsom volunteers had the opportunity to preform live fire training on an acquired structure near town. This training is crucial for keeping skills up and is a great time for us to try new tactics learned in fire classes.

We couldn’t have asked for a better training. The weather finally cooled off a bit and we had great help from our friends over at Bearpond Rural Volunteer Fire Dept. Special shout out to Vance County Emergency Services for having a truck out there to ensure all of us stayed safe while while burning.

It’s a Don!!!

Yesterday, our Special Operations crew got to welcome its newest member, Don O’Neal! Don has worked hard over the last few months and has obtained several of his NC Technical Rescuer Core courses.

While Don was up in the sky, the rest of the crew was busy setting up rigging, performing safety checks, and communicating with the aerial operator to ensure a seamless operation during our grain bin rescue drill.

Grain bins may seem harmless from the outside, but on the inside, they can be extremely dangerous. One wrong step can leave you trapped in what can be described as quicksand, all while working in a low-oxygen environment. Additionally, the dust produced by the grain can be extremely flammable, so great care must be taken to minimize sparks and running equipment.

Thankfully, your Epsom volunteers train for emergencies like this. During the drill, the crew was able to put several new tools to work that we’ve recently added to our technical rescue trailer, including our drill-powered grain auger, grain mats, and the star of the show—the Great Wall of Rescue! This portable wall system provides relief to a trapped person from the pressure of the grain.

Epsom would like to give a big shout-out to Bearpond Rural Fire Department for providing Ladder 18 for us to use. This cooperation between departments allows us to provide the best possible service to the communities we serve.

Tonight your Epsom volunteers along with units from Vance County Fire Department Cokesbury Volunteer Fire Department Townsville Fire Department Kittrell Fire Department and Watkins Vol Fire Dept participated in a water emergency mutual aid training. Departments from all over the county got to familiarize themselves with water rescue equipment from other departments. Knowing what resources are available nearby is critical to an effective and fast water rescue response. Big thanks to Vance county fire department for hosting the training at Kerr lake.

Last night your Epsom volunteers 👩‍🚒 started the process of prepping a house for a live burn training🔥.
This training is crucial for keeping our skills up. It allows us to train on a real fireground so that we can highlight skills that need to be improved on so when a call comes in we can bring our A game‼️.

While prepping the house we found some honey bees 🍯🐝had taken shelter but don’t worry we have contacted the proper authorities and the bees will be removed and put onto another farm in the Epsom community.

If you stepped outside today and thought, “Did someone leave the grill on?”… you’re not alone 😅

The haze and smoke you’re seeing around Epsom is drifting down from the Canadian wildfires. While it might look (and smell) a little unusual, there’s no immediate cause for concern in our area.

So no, your neighbor isn’t hosting the world’s longest cookout, and we promise we’re not secretly testing a new smoke machine 🚒💨

As always, if anything changes, we’ll keep you updated. In the meantime, maybe take it easy outdoors if you’re sensitive to smoke—and blame Canada just this once 😉

👀Progress being made on 53👀

Our friends down in Florida at the E-One plant have made some exciting progress on our new fire engine!!
Word has it we will be making a trip around Mid August to do an inspection before she makes her way back up to Rocky Mount for some final installs 🤞

🚨Incident notification 🚨

Tonight at approximately 10:30 your Epsom volunteers were dispatched on the second alarm for a fire at a commercial manufacturing plant fire in Henderson. Units operated on scene until 1:30 the next morning.

Units from Bearpond Fire Dept Vance County Fire Department Cokesbury Volunteer Fire Department Kittrell Fire Department Watkins Vol Fire Dept Vance County EMS Vance County Emergency Operations all responded to the incident. Franklinton Fire Department responded to Bearpond fire station with an engine company to provide coverage to the south side of the county.

Thanks to the swift response from all responding departments property damage to the plant was minimized.
