A NIGHT TO REMEMBER | On [Tuesday, October 6] from [5:30PM-8:30PM] Fair Park will be filled with families, First Responders and fun!

National Night Out returns to bring our Community closer to Law Enforcement agencies by creating positive, mutually-beneficial celebrations.

All food and entertainment are absolutely FREE. Enjoy live music, meet the brave men and women of Henderson Police Department, and Henderson Fire Department; along with other incredible First Responders from across Rusk County.

NATIONAL POLICE K9 DAY | K9 Officer Barney became part of a long and prestigious history with his official Swearing-In Ceremony held August 18, 2020.

Dogs were used informally by law enforcement, guarding piers and tracking down outlaws, as far back as the Middle Ages. However, not until the late 19th century were trained dogs used as formal partners in policing.

Modern-day police dogs trace their origin back to Belgium. An officer shortage led the police commissioner to petition the Mayor for dogs instead. Policemen trained these dogs to support the force, leading to the first canine training program. News of the Belgian program spread, with Germany experimenting in precise dog breeding.

In the early 1900s, five puppies bred specifically for police work were brought to New York City. Over the next several decades police dog programs became more popular. By the 1970s, the use of police dogs had become mainstream.

Today there are an estimated 50,000 active police dogs in the United States. That’s a long way from the five original imported puppies! National Police K9 Day is celebrated annually on September 1st to honor the service and sacrifice of law enforcement dogs.

Dogs like our beloved Barney support Henderson Police Department by protecting officers and civilians from crime and illegal activities.

HENDERSON CITIZEN POLICE ACADEMY | Have you ever imagined what intense preparation is required to rush into unknown, often dangerous situations?

Perhaps you’ve seen news footage, or a video on Youtube and questioned the actions of the police, as well as events that followed. Maybe you’ve had an interest in law enforcement, need some questions answered, or would just like a 'behind the badge' view of law enforcement.

🚔 Henderson Police Department is currently accepting applications for their Citizen Police Academy course.

▪ Classes held: September 8-November 3
▪ Time: Tuesdays from 6:30PM - 8:30PM
▪ Limited enrollment: 25 Seats Only

That's right! Your new best buddy and forever Fur Baby. Henderson TX Animal Center will be Clearing The Shelter with an adoption event SATURDAY [August 22] from [10AM until 2PM] at [1201 HIGHLAND DRIVE].

All adoption fees are waived for qualified applicants.

🐶 Canines have received at least (1) DAPPV (Distemper-Adenovirus-Parainfluenza-Parvovirus), Bordetella vaccine, heartworm test, dewormer, heartworm prevention and flea control treatment.

🐱 Felines have received at least (1) HCPCh (Feline Rhinotracheitis-Calici-Panleukopenia-Chlamydia psittaci) vaccine, heartworm test, dewormer, heartworm preventative and flea treatment.

FIRE IN THE SKY | The most intense geomagnetic storm on record took place 167 years ago in 1859. Henderson residents were terror-stricken as the entire East Texas sky turned deep blood-red, then brilliant green.

Texas and Red River Telegraph Company had created a technological marvel by stringing lines into Downtown Henderson barely five years earlier. Now operators watched in horror as massive energy surges caused sparks to shower from telegraph keys. Chemically treated telegraph paper blackened spontaneously and wires burst into flames behind walls. Residents escaped into streets screaming as telegraph lines released deafening crackles and static.

Scientists were unprepared as the gargantuan G5-class storm plowed through Earth's magnetic field. The powerful impacts, equivalent to 60 billion megatons of TNT, swayed the atmosphere back and forth.

Throughout Rusk County fluctuating electric currents grew to a level where “hardly a wire was working anywhere”. Eerie and colorful auroras appeared, making skies so bright copies of Henderson Daily News could be read clearly at midnight.
