Our Roads, Our Safety Week.

Our Roads, Our Safety® Week is FMCSA's national, annual safety observance dedicated to raising awareness on how to share the road safely with large trucks and buses. Each day brings a new lens on what it means to share the road safely. Follow along all week and share the daily content with your network and communities.

Our Roads, Our Safety® Week serves as a reminder that safer roads require all of us to do our part — because every safe decision behind the wheel helps save lives.

Monday, June 1 | "See Big. Drive Smart." Safety reminder: stay out of blind spots, never cut in front of a large truck or bus, and give them extra room to turn.

BRAKING BAD..🦾

Checking the air brake system daily on a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) is critical for both safety and legal compliance. Air brake systems depend on airtight hoses to deliver compressed air from the compressor to the brake chambers. A damaged or leaking hose can reduce braking power or cause total brake failure.

To ensure proper braking performance,
air brakes need adequate pressure to apply and release correctly. Damaged hoses can cause delayed braking, uneven braking, or brake lockup.

Brake failure is a major cause of serious CMV crashes.
Inspecting hoses daily helps identify issues before it becomes dangerous and meets DOT/FMCSA requirements/ pre-trip inspections.

Vehicles with defective hoses can be placed out of service during a FMCSA inspection. Catching hose wear early avoids expensive repairs and downtime.
Replacing a worn hose is much cheaper than repairing collision damage or worse..

During a pre-trip inspection, drivers should check for the following:

1. Cracks, cuts, abrasions,
bulges or dry rot hoses.

2. Loose fittings and clamps for
audible air leaks.

3. Check hoses rubbing against tires or frame components.

4. Proper connection between tractor and trailer glad hands and air tanks.(No air leaks).

The bottom line is a properly maintained air brake system keeps you and the CMV safe, reliable, and within federal safety regulations.

Just a Reminder, Most Accidents Can be Avoided..Stay Safe Out There...

Hey CDL drivers!🚚

Some big changes are ahead to save you time, trips, and paperwork! It’s all part of our rollout to a new licensing system launching June 8.

Here’s what you need to know ⬇️

-Starting June 8, medical certificates will be submitted electronically by approved by providers directly to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

-Kentucky’s MyCDL portal will be discontinued effective June 4.

- Commercial Learner’s Permits will be valid for one year (instead of 6 months). They cannot be renewed.

-myDrive will launch allowing CDL account holders to check their card status, apply for state waivers, sign up for reminder emails, pay reinstatement fees and view communications from the Transportation Cabinet.

Click It or Ticket - 2026🚓

Kentucky’s “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign is running statewide from May 18 through June 1, 2026, including the Memorial Day travel period.

Please keep in mind that Click It or Ticket is a national high-visibility enforcement campaign that focuses specifically on the seatbelt violations, and urging drivers to always buckle up. Law enforcement agencies across Kentucky are increasing seat belt enforcement and can stop drivers solely for seat belt violations. The Kentucky State Police encourage everyone to be safe and wear their seatbelt while traveling on any roadway.

Protect what matters the most! Please Buckle up!

Seeing Is Believing! Safety Tip of The Week.

Poor visibility conditions is a major factor in Commercial Motor Vehicle crashes. Even a few seconds of reduced visibility at highway speeds can create dangerous situations. Be sure to periodically check the wipers' condition and always make sure they're operating properly.

Kentucky State Police Participates in the World’s Largest Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Safety Program in 2026.

The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) Division is committed to enhancing roadway safety by focusing on the enforcement of commercial vehicle regulations and driver education. As part of this ongoing effort, KSP will participate in International Road-Check, a high-volume, three-day inspection and enforcement initiative from May 12-14.

During last year’s International Road-Check, 56,178 inspections were conducted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. North America's top vehicle out-of-service violation was for defective service brakes, accounting for 24% of total vehicle out-of-service violations. Since the program’s inception in 1988, more than 1.8 million roadside inspections have been conducted.

The event also serves as an educational opportunity, raising awareness among commercial vehicle operators and the general public about the importance of compliance with safety regulations.
