happy pride, hendo 💕🏳️‍🌈. Here are some photos of hvl pride through the years starting with our little picnic in 2019, through covid pride in cars, and the giant present day festival.

I never let a conversation about organizing go by without talking about the history of organized Pride in our town.

We keep on showing up, when things are good, bad, scary, joyful.

So endlessly proud of this community; can’t wait to celebrate with yall on Saturday 💕.

Reminder that we’re holding a housing summit on Wednesday night at HHS from 5:30-7. We’ll talk about future planning and steps we can take to address affordability.

This is the culmination of the effort of the Strategic Housing Plan Subcommittee, made up of folks who have been working on this for over two years now.

Affordable housing affects all of us, and we’re hopeful looking forward that we can make meaningful change in the right direction. Hope yall can attend on Wednesday!

Last year on my way home from Raleigh I stopped by the North Carolina Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Thomasville, NC. It was incredibly sobering to see so many names- so many people who were deeply loved by their families and communities. The memorial park was peaceful and offers families a place to honor their lost loved ones.

I grew up with a personal connection specifically to the war in Vietnam, and am grateful that I was raised to take the sacrifices of all men and women who have died while serving our country —and the impact of that sacrifice on those they leave behind — seriously. They and their families deserve our deepest respect today and always.

Brief explainer about h1089- more detailed substack coming soon

•The amendment does *not* have a clear cap, or any clear mechanism, but it does require the general assembly to pass a cap in the next session.

•We know that families are burdened by property tax: statewide property tax cap could limit the ability of cities and towns to provide essential services because of the structure of the state constitution rather than providing the relief we know families need.

•It will be on your ballot in November, and if it passes, legislators will decide the specifics afterwards.

while we have all loved to hate this sculpture for years, it’s time to say bye 🤝

In one of the easiest votes of my council career thus far, we decided tonight (unanimously and quickly) to take down the sculpture on this fountain and to replace it with something prettier.

If you’re interested in bike and pedestrian safety and advocacy, Bike.Walk.HVL is doing great thing in Hendersonville.

They had their annual Community Event yesterday and talked about how their efforts have led to shared lane markings, route signage near trails in town, and city funding allocation within the transportation bond and received grants. They’ve done all this in just a couple years of focused advocacy.

Hendersonville has a high per capita pedestrian and bicycle fatality rate, including a heartbreaking bicycle fatality in town just last year; and it is urgent that we take steps to ensure safety.

Bike Walk needs event captains, board members (they’re a newly incorporated official nonprofit), and community partners. If you want to join up you can learn more at bikewalkhvl.org

I did not take enough event photos so here’s an assortment of bike-related photos, including a couple I took of Blue Ridge Bicycle Club and one of baby me 😂

This message made my government nerd heart so happy.

In North Carolina cities do not have authority beyond what is expressly granted to them in the state constitution.
It’s why we we have such close relationships with our legislators and [part of] why our state seems to operate a little differently from some others.

You can find the list by looking at NC General Statute 160.

I talked about this for so long it got dark but don’t worry I cut it down to under 2 minutes 😂

We’re not changing the park, yall! ❤️ Speaking up *does* matter, especially at the local level, and I love when I get to see and show yall the evidence of that 🤝

Preston Blakely and Andrew Aydin did an incredible job organizing folks for a porch hang and q&a session on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon in the mountains. So honored and excited that folks took time out of their weekend to come by and engage in chats about local issues with us.

So thankful for Andrew being such a gracious host, for Preston organizing the details, and to Carson (Carson Keeter ) for the gorgeous photos. 💕
