Genets are slender, mostly nocturnal African carnivores recognized by their striking spots and long, ringed tails. Although they may look a little like cats, they belong to the family Viverridae, alongside civets.

The genus Genetta includes numerous species that can be remarkably difficult to distinguish by appearance alone.

Through the Genetta Conservation Initiative, Twin Pine Conservation Institute is working to improve identification, preserve population records, document husbandry and reproduction, and support future genetic and taxonomic research.

GENETTA DIVERSITY 🧬

Genets are incredibly diverse, and what they look like doesn’t always tell us exactly what they are. That’s why knowing where they came from, documenting their differences, and studying their genetics is so important. There is still a lot to learn about the genus Genetta, and that’s what makes working with them so exciting.

Genetta Conservation Initiative is focused on untangling this diversity through careful records, collaboration, and genetic research.

🎣 cats are one of the world’s most unique wild felines, specially adapted for life around water and famous for their amazing fishing abilities.
We hope everyone who meets Marina leaves with a greater appreciation for these remarkable cats and the importance of protecting the wetlands they call home.

Shining a Spotlight on the Southern Aardwolf📸🔦
Last month, we were honored to welcome National Geographic Photo Ark Joel Sartore, Photographer to TPCI, where he photographed several species in our care, including the first Southern aardwolf to be featured in the National Geographic Photo Ark.

For us, this is more than a photograph. It’s an opportunity to introduce the world to a species that deserves greater recognition and to further the mission of our Aardwolf Conservation Initiative through education, research, and collaboration.

We’re incredibly grateful to Joel Sartore and the National Geographic Photo Ark for helping tell the story of this extraordinary species.

Congratulations, Sana!

We are so proud of Sana, a student in the USA, for completing her capstone project on one of Africa’s most unique and least-studied carnivores ~ the aardwolf!
Twin Pine Conservation Institute was honored to answer her questions and be a small part of her learning journey.
Seeing young people develop a passion for wildlife and conservation gives us hope for the future.

There’s nothing quite like watching kangaroos do what they were made to do. 🦘💨 Seeing them bound across the field never gets old. Moments like this remind us why providing space for natural behaviors is so important. Just kangaroos being kangaroos.
