When Larry first signed up to volunteer with Literacy Connection, he hoped to make a difference in someone else’s life. What he didn’t expect was how meaningful the experience would become for him personally.
“As I complete my first two months tutoring for Literacy Connection, I want to share my experience,” Larry says. “My first response is what I’ve been telling my friends since the beginning: This is the most rewarding thing I’ve done in a long time.”
Like many of our tutors, Larry quickly discovered that tutoring is about much more than academics. It’s about encouragement, trust, and building relationships.
“Like many newbies, I was a little anxious at first, but that soon gave way to the joy of seeing someone light up as they take a step forward in learning a new language.”
Many people hesitate to volunteer because they don’t see themselves as teachers. Larry says Literacy Connection’s training and curriculum helped him feel prepared and supported from the beginning.
“Perfection is not asked of the student or tutor,” Larry says, “just the willingness to follow a well-written, even fun curriculum, and to be a patient, encouraging support to someone eager to learn the language and customs of their new country.”
