Literacy Connection was delighted to spend some time recently with **P.E.O. Chapter H**!

We shared how literacy opens doors to greater independence, opportunity, and connection and how volunteers and supporters make that work possible.

Kelly was joined by Board President Gail Garren, herself a third-generation P.E.O. member, making the visit an especially meaningful connection.

Special thanks to Elaine Harris for the invitation and warm welcome—and for being a good sport while everyone figured out the logistics of photographing people of very different heights! 😄

Thank you, P.E.O. Chapter H, for your commitment to education and for taking the time to learn more about Literacy Connection and our work in the community.

That simple shift can make all the difference.

At Literacy Connection, learning is a place for encouragement, persistence, and possibility. Every “try again” is another chance to learn, grow, and build confidence.

For many adult English learners, speaking up can feel intimidating.

Every new word takes courage. Creating a space where mistakes are welcomed and not judged helps build the confidence that leads to real progress.

At Literacy Connection, we know that growth doesn't come from getting everything right the first time. It comes from trying, learning, and trying again.

Research continues to show that volunteering isn't just good for the community; it's good for healthy aging, too!

Studies of adults over 50 have found that those who volunteer regularly are more likely to experience a stronger sense of purpose, lower levels of loneliness and depression, increased physical activity, and even a lower risk of developing physical limitations over time. One large U.S. study found these benefits were especially evident among people who volunteered about 100 hours per year!

Just ask our English language acquisition tutors about the benefits of tutoring! Come see us at the Aging Resources of WNC Expo on Thursday, August 20 from 10am-2pm at Blue Ridge Mall to learn more about how you can volunteer and get the health benefits for yourself!

One of the highlights of our month is Tutor Toolbox.

It's a chance for our tutors to pick up new ideas, share what's working, and help each other work through challenges. Everyone brings different experiences, and we all learn from one another.

Then we enjoy lunch together and catch up. It's one of our favorite ways to build community while supporting the people who make our mission possible.

We're grateful for our amazing tutors!

Making mistakes can feel uncomfortable, especially when you're learning a new language. But every mistake is a sign that you're trying, growing, and moving forward.

One of our English language students recently shared this simple reminder: "Making mistakes is how we learn."

At Literacy Connection, we celebrate progress over perfection. Every conversation, every new word, and yes, every mistake, is another step toward confidence and new opportunities.
