Cailin Harris on the new Prom restrictions:

"If you are currently a female at JP2, you sat in on an assembly led by Mrs. Riggs and Ms. Donovan that has drawn quite a bit of attention to the upcoming Prom. And, like many of my female counterparts, I was originally enraged at the restrictions that seemed to be put on us for a night that is, to use a movie cliché, supposed to be one of the best of our high school memories.

Adding to the tension were the comments made regarding dates – requiring permission forms for dates that are not Pope students, that they also adhere to the dress requirements, and that they can be not be older than twenty.

Girls left the auditorium upset that their choices were limited and that the school had pushed the micromanagement envelope to its absolute breaking point... Ready to (respectfully) bash the administration, I compiled a list of questions and went to discover why, now, regulations are being instituted.

I started with Mr. McLaren, who chose Ms. Donovan and Mrs. Riggs because of their youth and the fact that both had recently shopped for wedding dresses in modern styles that were also tasteful.
“We are already playing catch up with other schools that have these regulations in place, and after what was seen at Coming Home, there is a fear that with the current trends in what girls are wearing, that we were going to have to, for the first time ever, turn girls away from Prom.” Then, with a rather terrorized expression, he described dresses that seemed to rise “18 inches above the knee with high heels to match.”"

More here from Mrs. Riggs, Ms. Donovan, and Mrs. Hager on explanations behind the restrictions and the role of generational gaps:

Patrick Griffin on Vanderbilt's Nondiscrimination Policy:

"On January 31st at 6 P.M., over one hundred Vanderbilt students gathered outside Furman Hall on campus dressed in white t-shirts and burst out in song. They sang “Don’t Stop Believing,” while waiting for the doors to open for a community forum discussing the enforcement of the nondiscrimination policy.

The controversial policy requires all student organizations that receive funding from Vanderbilt to allow anyone to join or run for office regardless of his or her gender, race, sexual orientation, or religious background. Having been in place for a while, the policy has only recently been enforced, to the disdain of clubs not in compliance.

Not surprisingly, the organizations that do not agree with the policy are motivated by more than keeping a degree of selectivity. The Christian Legal Society, Beta Upsilon Chi, Graduate Student Fellowship, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes all violate the policy and currently can bar a student from membership based on their religious or ethical beliefs—i.e. being a different religion or being a homosexual. From the standpoint of the university, they are attempting to eradicate any discrimination on campus, even by religious clubs that have conflicting ideologies. The Christian clubs, however, see the policy as strangely particular to their cause..."

Trend Watch: Prom 2012 by Sarah Missimer

"Bold colors are filling up the racks at every department store and boutique offering prom dresses. Instead of jewel tones, the focus is on bright reds, cobalt blues, and fuchsia pinks. These colors are gracing many styles of dresses from princess to A-line and to finally mermaid. Instead of overpowering the dress, the colors actually work with the dress to bring out a feminine, powerful touch.

Making a complete 180 in the color spectrum, designers have put out many collections with n**e tones. Champagne, taupe, and alabaster pop out against the bright colors on the rack. If looking for a subtle but elegant dress color, then a n**e tone will work perfectly. Dressing in the n**e palette will give a graceful appearance to anyone wearing it. However, it is important to remember that n**e tones may wash out certain skin tones if not worn correctly. If wishing to wear a n**e color on a fair complexion, then try finding a dress that has embellishments to add another dimension to the dress thus keeping the color and skin tone from blending.

Flashy embellishments took over this season. Almost every prom dress seen this year will have an embellishment of some form. The most popular embellishment this year is “mirrors,” which is a fancy way of saying reflectors. These are basically over sized jewels or sequins placed on the dress to add dimension and sparkle. Designers have not gone overboard, though. Embellishments have not covered entire dresses like last year with the sequin outburst. Instead, they are starting at the top of the dress and cascading downward, eventually dispersing towards the bottom. This adds a beautiful touch to the dresses, making them very glamorous."

Hannah Vickery on Discrimination Against Teens:

"Recently, a group of friends and I walked into Barnes and Noble on a Friday night and went to the children’s section to look at Where’s Waldo books. After about thirty minutes, a few members of the group migrated to the Lego section. Around this time, a police officer came over and told us it was time to either move to another part of the store or leave the premises. This I understood, even though Barnes and Noble did not have a sign up strictly directing persons of a certain age away from the Lego section.

As we were obeying the officer’s orders, an infuriated woman came over and accused us in a very abrasive and aggressive manner of “terrorizing her little girl, making fun of her, and telling her she couldn’t play with the Legos.” Our group had only been in the Lego area for a few minutes and were respectfully doing what the officer had asked – leaving. There were also a number of other teenagers in the store besides us, and this woman automatically assumed that the individuals who made fun of her little girl were us without any proof. Of course, I tried to stand up for myself and my friends, telling her we did not know what she was talking about and that we did not insult her little girl. Then, the officer started taking her side, telling us “You should be ashamed of yourselves” and “You need to leave. Now!” The officer also asked us, “How old are you? Are your parents coming to pick you up?” to which we replied, “18, and we are driving ourselves.” The officer than said, “18 and you all are in Barnes and Noble on a Friday night playing with Legos? Come on, there is something wrong here. It’s time to go.”

Joseph Lascara on the trip to D.C. for the March for Life:

"On the weekend of January 23rd 2012, over 50 JPII students travelled to Washington D.C. to represent a part of the Diocese of Nashville in the fight for life and praying for a stop to abortion.

The bus departed from JPII on Saturday, January 29th at 8:00 A.M. and made a few stops along the way to accommodate for food and bathroom breaks. At about 9:30 P.M. the trek was finally over and the students arrived safely at the parish of St. Martin of Tour’s Catholic Church in Maryland. After a quick welcoming, guys and girls were separated and sent off to bed to prepare for the busy day ahead."

Connor McCarthy on the MBA recruiting violations:

"After a five-month investigation, Montgomery Bell Academy was slammed for violations of rules regarding recruiting, tuition, and financial aid. The investigation began after MBA’s lawyers contacted the TSSAA in August of 2011, which led to an internal investigation. The violations were formulated into a seven-page letter, which was then delivered to the school on January 12th.

The major violations of the report dealt with former head coach Daniel McGugin who paid players’ families with a cashier’s check, procured by an MBA Board of Trustee, of $1,500 dollars..."
