Cailin Harris on the new Prom restrictions:
"If you are currently a female at JP2, you sat in on an assembly led by Mrs. Riggs and Ms. Donovan that has drawn quite a bit of attention to the upcoming Prom. And, like many of my female counterparts, I was originally enraged at the restrictions that seemed to be put on us for a night that is, to use a movie cliché, supposed to be one of the best of our high school memories.
Adding to the tension were the comments made regarding dates – requiring permission forms for dates that are not Pope students, that they also adhere to the dress requirements, and that they can be not be older than twenty.
Girls left the auditorium upset that their choices were limited and that the school had pushed the micromanagement envelope to its absolute breaking point... Ready to (respectfully) bash the administration, I compiled a list of questions and went to discover why, now, regulations are being instituted.
I started with Mr. McLaren, who chose Ms. Donovan and Mrs. Riggs because of their youth and the fact that both had recently shopped for wedding dresses in modern styles that were also tasteful.
“We are already playing catch up with other schools that have these regulations in place, and after what was seen at Coming Home, there is a fear that with the current trends in what girls are wearing, that we were going to have to, for the first time ever, turn girls away from Prom.” Then, with a rather terrorized expression, he described dresses that seemed to rise “18 inches above the knee with high heels to match.”"
More here from Mrs. Riggs, Ms. Donovan, and Mrs. Hager on explanations behind the restrictions and the role of generational gaps:
