The Children & Family Resource Center honors Dolly Parton’s legacy of championing early literacy. Parton established the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in 1995, inspired by her father, Lee Parton, who never had the opportunity to learn to read or write. What began as an effort to provide books to children in her home community in Tennessee became an international early literacy movement providing free, age-appropriate books to children from birth through age five.
Children and families in Henderson County have had the good fortune to be eligible for this free resource and our staff are often the first to help families sign up.
Early literacy has so many benefits:
Stronger neural connections: Frequent talking and reading build vital brain pathways in a child’s first five years.
Better memory and focus: Listening to stories helps kids expand their attention span and mental processing.
Problem-solving skills: Kids learn to use logical reasoning by connecting story events to real life.
Larger vocabulary: Shared reading introduces unique words not used in daily talk.
Clear self-expression: Kids learn how to talk about their needs and ideas with confidence.
Academic achievement: Early readers adjust faster to kindergarten and perform better across school subjects.
Empathy building: Stories show children how other people feel, boosting emotional intelligence.
Better emotional control: Good language skills help children name and handle big feelings instead of acting out.
Closer relationships: Reading together creates safe, loving bonds between children and caregivers.

The GLO Mobile supports children under the age of five who are not in structured care and enhances kindergarten readiness by creating fun and interactive high-quality experiences.
The mobile aims to remove barriers such as transportation, availability of care, and expenses by providing parents access to necessary support for their children to begin kindergarten here in Henderson County.
The GLO mobile visits areas in which are furthest from child care centers that may have issues with transportation. These visits allow children and caregivers to engage in positive connections with other families and provide appropriate developmental activities for the child and caregiver to do together, as well as connect families to resources.
