Here’s some gross news for you: Public Works’ environmental team has collected more than 450 ticks (three different species!) so far this year through their tick surveillance program. While ticks have been found countywide, higher concentrations have been noted in the Varina and Sandston areas.

Tick bites can cause diseases such as Lyme disease or Alpha-Gal Syndrome. To protect yourself against ticks, you can wear long pants, tuck your pants into your socks, walk in the center of trails, avoid tall grass/brush and perform tick checks regularly. This includes checking yourself, kids and any pets!

If you find a tick attached to you, it’s important to remove it promptly by grabbing it with tweezers as close to the skin as possible.

DPW monitors ticks at trap sites in Henrico parks countywide. The team is adding more tick sites to better track local tick populations and species. Learn more about ticks in Henrico by visiting https://henrico.gov/works/engineering-environmental-services/ticks-in-henrico/

They've heard plenty of excuses. Now, the Girl Scouts from Troop 5740 in Henrico County are busting common myths about bike helmets. "Helmets save lives," they say. "Make sure to stay safe and responsible while riding bikes. Always remember your helmet."

An estimated 120,000 emergency rooms visits occur each year for the treatment of non-fatal, crash-related bicycle injuries, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of head and brain injuries in the event of a crash. All bicyclists, regardless of age, can help protect themselves by wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet each time they ride.

We're happy to announce that residents countywide will now have the choice of Henrico's refuse collection service! 🗑️

The expansion will make the service available to all areas of the county and will occur in two phases, with the first beginning June 1 and a second beginning in 2027.

“We are excited to begin offering our refuse services to additional areas in the county,” Public Utilities Director Bentley Chan said. “This process has been long in discussion and long in the making and is now made possible thanks to the support of the Board of Supervisors, the community and county staff.”

Collections normally scheduled for Friday will occur on Saturday.

What do you think of when you hear the term “public works”? 👷 💧 🛣️

The truth is, it encompasses a lot of municipal services, ranging from road infrastructure to water treatment. In Henrico, these services are done by both the departments of Public Works and Public Utilities!

For National Public Works Week, we wanted to take a moment to recognize the men and women who provide the vast range of services from these departments to both sustain and improve the infrastructure of our county. Each pothole filled, trash bag collected, WOAH! vest distributed, water faucet turned on and so much more is due to the work of these crews.

Happy National Public Works Week!

We're so excited about our Arrive Alive program winning a VaCO award!

Check out the full details about the program at https://henrico.gov/works/arrive-alive-henrico/

🎉Henrico earned the Virginia Association of Counties’ top award for a program to increase awareness of ageism and highlight how stereotyping, prejudice or bias against older adults can lead to poorer health outcomes.

“By addressing ageism within emergency services, Henrico has created a model that strengthens both its employees and the communities they serve,” said Charles Hartgrove, a judge in the awards program.

Henrico also was recognized for “Arrive Alive,” a transportation safety program to improve understanding and address patterns of fatal and serious injury crashes across the community.
