We don’t do the work we do for awards, but we sure do appreciate being recognized by the National Association of Counties (NACo) for our amazing programs! 🏆

The Board of Supervisors presented Henrico’s NACo awards at Tuesday’s board meeting. Out of 56 (!) total achievement awards, two were awarded to the Department of Public Works, along with a Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) award.

🦟 Our mosquito team received a health award for their Vector Surveillance and Control Elementary Education Program. If your kid has ever come home from school in a construction paper headband with eyes and a long paper nose, this team came to their class! They visit elementary schools countywide to empower students to protect themselves against insect-borne diseases, an initiative that aligns with the Virginia Standards of Learning for grades K-4.

🚦 Arrive Alive Henrico received a transportation award for its comprehensive, data-driven initiative designed to reduce roadway fatalities and serious injuries across Henrico. The Arrive Alive Safety Action Plan, completed last year, serves as transformative roadmap guiding investments, safety enhancements and measurable progress toward our long-term goal of significantly reducing severe crashes. This program also received a VACo achievement award!

Fenwick Street will close between Sizer and Lyndover roads beginning Monday, Aug. 31 for a drainage improvement project. The road is anticipated to be closed for approximately three months.

Motorists will be detoured around the closure by way of Wilmont Drive.

Glasgow Road between Scotland Lane and Sadler Walk Lane will be closed to through-traffic from Monday, Aug. 24 through Saturday, Aug. 29. Crews will demolish and rebuild the section of road, weather permitting.

Traffic will be detoured by way of Chapman Mill Drive, Belfast Road and Sadler Walk.

Motorists can expect traffic delays at times as construction of a roundabout at Wyndham Park Drive and Dominion Club Boulevard begins Monday, Aug. 24.

Work is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Flaggers will direct traffic through the intersection. The project is expected to wrap up in December.

The late-morning start time and afternoon pause are designed to avoid impacts on dropping off and picking up students at nearby Shady Grove Elementary School.

Henrico County, along with partners in the city of Richmond and counties of Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover and Powhatan, has lifted its request for voluntary water conservation measures.

This decision is effective today and based on current flows in the James River being above conservation triggers in accordance with Richmond’s James River Regional Flow Management Plan.

Though the voluntary water conservation measures are lifted and flows in the James River are stable, water conservation should be a regular practice for all residents and businesses. Conserving water is an important tool in reducing water demand. Water conservation tips can be found at https://www.vdh.virginia.gov/drinking-water/office-of-drinking-water/water-conservation-tips/

We will continue to monitor conditions. If conditions worsen, the call for voluntary conservation measures will be reissued.

Meadow Road between Chartwood and Taylor roads will be closed through Friday, Aug. 7, for work to connect water lines to a subdivision under construction.

The closures went into effect this morning. A detour is redirecting traffic around the work zone via Hanover Road, North Airport Drive, Old Hanover Road and Grapevine Road.

Richmond and surrounding localities remain under voluntary water conservation in support of the Commonwealth’s request. Officials will reevaluate next week based on river conditions, rainfall and guidance from the Virginia DEQ.

Beulah Road between LaFrance and Portugee roads will close beginning Saturday, Aug. 1, for utility improvements for the Virginia National Guard’s Army Aviation Support Facility.

A detour will redirect traffic to LaFrance and Portugee. Beulah is expected to reopen by Monday, Aug. 24.
