ROYAL COMETS-RAIDERS GAMES!

Today's Royal Comets-Raiders Games were a shining example of the power of inclusion in our schools—where every student is given the opportunity to participate, excel, and be celebrated.

Rush-Henrietta hosted the inspiring event at Elmer Gordon Stadium on the Senior High School campus. It allowed students with special needs from both R-H and Fairport to take center stage in a Special Olympics-style celebration.

In the past, school districts from throughout Monroe County held a joint event for this purpose. Last year, the tradition returned to our community on a smaller but just as meaningful scale. The joy on the track and field during today's two-hour event was palpable!

Event organizers express their sincere thanks to the R-H Facilities and Security teams; Senior High School Custodial Staff; Link Crew; Transportation Department; JoJo’s Cool Bus; and the teachers, paraprofessionals, and other staff members who helped make this event such a success. Your commitment, teamwork, and flexibility created an incredible experience for everyone involved.

We truly appreciate all you do to support our students and school community each and every day!

May is Water Safety Month! As we prepare for summer fun, some Rush-Henrietta students are learning about the importance of water safety, smart decision-making, and building confidence around water. These lessons are taking part in physical education classes. Whether at a home pool, lake, beach, or water park, safety always comes first. Play it smart, stay aware, and help make this summer safe for everyone! For free water safety resources and tips, visit the American Red Cross Water Safety Resources at www.rhnet.org/water-safety. Dear Families, Employees, and Community Members,

It is my pleasure to announce that Rush-Henrietta’s 2026-2027 budget proposal was approved today by a margin of 1,372 to 1,178. On behalf of our school community, we extend sincere thanks to everyone who made the time to vote today. Your participation in our schools is vital to our district's future success.

There is more good news to share, as well. A second proposition, relating to the purchase of new gas and diesel buses, was approved by a margin of 1,748 to 796.

In addition, Laura Borate (1,565 votes) and Shiloh Arthmann (1,328) both were re-elected to serve unpaid, three-year terms on the Board of Education. Dre Collins finished third with 1,223 votes.

Thank you for your continued support of our students, staff, and community.

Sincerely,

Dr. Barbara A. Mullen
Superintendent

Budget Q&A

Rush-Henrietta’s annual budget vote and Board of Education election is Tuesday, May 19. People have asked what happens if the proposed budget does not pass. The Board of Education can either hold a second vote on the same or a revised budget proposal, or adopt a contingency budget that keeps the tax levy at the previous year's level. Thank you for being informed voters!

Highlighting Student Voices

On May 14, the Rush-Henrietta Senior High School gymnasium showcased student voices during a special morning assembly. Students from the public speaking class shared how our school community has shaped their lives. The students spoke about topics that were personally meaningful – from how a teacher had impacted their lives to the power of friendship. Some of those teachers, friends, and community members were on hand to hear the students tell their stories.

The high school student body was invited to witness the power of authentic storytelling. Using the LumiStory digital platform to help illustrate their stories, our Royal Comets took ownership of their experiences in a professional setting. LumiStory founder and former NFL quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, was on hand to support the students. LumiStory is one of several instructional software programs in use in Rush-Henrietta that provide opportunities for project-based learning, allowing students to show their learning in different ways. The students worked on their stories and presentations for a month, and we are very proud to provide this authentic public speaking experience for our students.

There was no cost to Rush-Henrietta for Mr. Kaepernick to be at the assembly.

Budget Q&A

One common question we have received regarding the upcoming vote is about the type of buses being purchased under Proposition 2. The district would purchase both gas and diesel buses if the proposition is approved. Thank you for being informed voters!

BEFORE THE MAY 19 BUDGET VOTE...
A Message from Superintendent Dr. Barbara Mullen

Dear Rush-Henrietta Community,

The district’s annual budget vote is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. next Tuesday, May 19. The vote will be at the district’s Transportation and Operations Center, 1133 Lehigh Station Road. Please make a plan now to vote next Tuesday. If you need an absentee or early voting ballot, see instructions at end of this message.

Misinformation is beginning to appear on social media. If you see a claim that is questionable, please reach out to me at www.rhnet.org/budgetquestions so the district can address it and provide accurate information. In the meantime, I want to share information regarding the district’s proposed 2026-2027 budget.

The proposed budget will

* preserve and strengthen instructional programs for 5,700+ R-H students.
* ensure ongoing mental wellness initiatives to support those R-H students.
* strengthen employees’ total compensation to make R-H more competitive. This includes teachers, bus drivers and monitors, paraprofessionals, clerical staff, and facilities employees.
* align spending with district priorities and Vision 2037 strategic plan.

Budget-to-Budget Change: 4.39%
This is the amount of money deemed necessary above and beyond last year’s budget. Some social media posts have referenced particular lines in the budget and make it appear as if the budget-to-budget change is much larger. It is not; the increase will be 4.39 percent.

Tax Levy Change: 2.17%
The school tax levy is the total dollar amount the district will collect from property owners to support the annual operating budget. Once approved, this amount is fixed and does not increase if assessments increase. Taking into account the School Tax Relief (STAR) benefit, a district resident owning a house assessed at $300,000 would see school tax rise by $82 next year.

Board of Education Candidates
Three community members are running for two open seats on the Board of Education. They are Dre Collins, Shiloh Arthmann, and Laura Borate. The trio recently answered questions during Meet the Candidates Night, which you can view by visiting www.rhnet.org/meetthecandidates today. In Rush-Henrietta, board members are volunteers who serve unpaid three-year terms.

Absentee and Early Ballots Now Available
Qualified voters who would like an application for an absentee ballot or early voting ballot may request one from District Clerk Cheryl Castronovo at 359-5010 or [email protected]. If this is of interest, contact her no later than the end of the business day Tuesday, May 12, for more information. You can learn more by consulting the back page of the newsletter that has been mailed to all houses. Some neighborhoods still might receive it in the next day or two.

The newsletter also can be read online here:

Thank you for staying informed and for joining me in voting Tuesday, May 19.

Sincerely,

Dr. Barbara A. Mullen
Superintendent
