My 9th book of the summer! This fulfills the "childhood favorite" entry. Written in the late 50's, it contains many derogatory stereotypes and racist terms. The preface includes a warning and explains the decision to leave it in its original form. I'm frankly shocked that it was an assigned reading in my mid-80s 6th grade English class without (in my recollection) any discussion about the harmful language used. Even placing it in context would have been helpful. Maybe the teacher did that but my memory of the story was rose-colored. After finishing it tonight, I feel slightly horrified that I remembered this so fondly. I'm glad I reread it, though, just to have my eyes opened. Do you have any books that, once you've reread it, felt differently about it?

Yay! Book #8 of 10 for the summer challenge is done! This fulfills the "published in the last year" category. Nice mystery from the author of Girl on a Train, about a reclusive artist, her legacy, and the strange happenings on her solitary Scottish island. Many false flags and red herrings, the story has several twists I didn't see coming. Pieces are put together at the end but leaves you wondering what really happened.

Wowza! This was a real page turner. Fiction, but based on the true story of the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna, Florida. I had heard of this and even have the book called The White House Boys in my library. Having read Colson Whitehead's other novel, Underground Railroad, I should have prepared myself for this one! The article below details the discovery of the graveyards.

I listened to this one over the summer! Very thought-provoking...live every day as your last...live your life with purpose...live your life as your own. Throw in a bunch of dystopian government overreach with a narcissistic power hungry politician and overlapping storylines. If you liked Adam Silvera's They Both Die at the End series, this is the next level. Terrific!

Here's a book I finally got around to reading. I'm so glad I waited to read this one at the age I am. The parts about Towanda make so much sense now! So many great moments in this book. I laughed and cried. Such a beautiful story of love, friendship, justice, strength, and peace. Loved it! The film is wonderful, too, but the book is a much richer story.

I just discovered that the RHSHSLibrary Instagram hasn't been automatically posting to the RHSHSLibrary page. So I am going to repost them here. Here's the first one!

Just finished this AMAZING book (recommended by a student). All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir. Cried several times. Wish I could read it for the first time again. Sal and Noor, children of immigrants with traumatic secrets in their past and present, struggle to hold onto their futures - and each other.
