On Monday March 23rd 2026 around 12:30pm, Co. 14 units were dispatched to the Franklin County/Patrick County line for a reported brush fire. First arriving units arrived to find approximately 1/2 acre on fire in the 1000 block of Fairystone Park Rd. AC-14 arrived and established command and all hands went to work containing the original fire in relatively short order. While personnel were strengthening containment lines, high winds caused the fire to jump the line. Additional resources were requested and on-scene suppression apparatus were relocated to protect nearby structures from the fast moving fire. After additional resources from the westside of Franklin County, as well as the Virginia Department of Forestry arrived, the fire was brought back under control with the addition of a dozer and back burning operations. After extensive mop up, command was terminated and all Franklin County units returned to service just after 18:00 hours with the scene being turned over to the Department of Forestry. In the end, it was determined that the fire burned 20 acres and was caused by a downed power line.

Co. 14 would like to pass along our sincere appreciation to Ferrum Fire Department, Fork Mountain Fire Department, Callaway Fire Department, Rocky Mount Fire Department, Franklin County Fire-EMS, and the Virginia Department of Forestry for responding and providing assistance. Because of the wind shift and fire jumping over an already well established fire line, things got western in a hurry and the outcome could have been substantially different without the assistance that all of the above agencies provided. We'd also like to thank the members of the community that showed up and provided rehab supplies for the firefighters, as they worked extremely hard at this incident.

Virginia’s 4 PM Burning Law is in effect from February 15 through April 30 each year.

The 4 PM Burning Law bans open-air burning prior to 4:00 p.m. if the fire is within 300 feet of the woods or dry grass which could carry fire to the woods. Burning is allowed between 4:00 p.m. and midnight as long as the burner takes proper precautions and attends the fire at all times.

It is critical that burners take precautions before using fire, as there may be legal and financial implications. Even if a person takes all proper precautions and obtains any locally required permits, whoever started the fire is responsible for suppressions costs should the fire escape. Violation of the 4 PM Burning Law is a Class 3 misdemeanor with a fine of not more than $500.

Over the past week, your volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad agencies have started up our annual membership drive to get more people like you engaged in serving our communities across FC. Through new innovative membership levels, in the last year, every agency has grown, with some seeing as much as 25-35% growth. Please consider reaching out to your local fire department or rescue squad to see how you can help, or at a minimum, please share their posts on FB when you run across them.
Volunteers eliminate a TREMENDOUS tax burden on taxpayers and we appreciate your encouragement and support more than you know.
