On July 27 at approximately 11:17 p.m., the Palominas Fire District was dispatched to a Special Rescue near Milepost 1 on Kings Ranch Road. While responding, SEACOM advised that the incident involved a swift water rescue with an individual trapped on the roof of a vehicle in flowing flood waters.

Recognizing the potential severity of the incident, the on-duty crew requested an ambulance from the Fry Fire District who responded with both an ambulance and their rescue to assist. Upon arrival, crews located a small passenger vehicle in flowing flood waters with one occupant stranded on the roof.

Palominas Fire District personnel immediately deployed two Swift Water Rescue Technicians who safely navigated through knee-high moving water to reach the victim. The individual was successfully rescued from the vehicle and brought safely out of the flowing water without injury. The occupant declined medical evaluation and was provided a courtesy ride home by the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.

The Palominas Fire District would like to thank our partners at the Fry Fire District and the Cochise County Sheriff's Office for their prompt response and assistance during this rescue. Incidents such as these highlight the importance of strong interagency partnerships and the commitment of our first responders to protecting the communities we serve.

As monsoon season continues, the Palominas Fire District reminds residents and visitors to use extreme caution during periods of heavy rainfall. Flood waters can rise rapidly, making roadways, washes, and low water crossings impassable with little warning. Never drive or walk through flooded areas—even shallow water can be powerful enough to sweep away a vehicle or person. When you encounter flood waters, remember: Turn Around, Don't Drown. No destination is worth risking your life.

Burn restriction in place!

Effective immediately the Palominas Fire District will be restricting open outdoor burning until further notice, a decision made in conjunction with our local fire service partners.

Extremely low moisture levels found in natural fuels such as grass and fine woody materials along with windy conditions will enhance the spread of uncontrolled fire.

This decision will be re-evaluated once monsoonal rains arrive.

Deployment Announcement – Firefighter/EMT Talon Duncan

On June 3, 2026, Firefighter/EMT Talon Duncan of the Palominas Fire District deployed to California alongside members of the Whetstone Fire District. This deployment followed a request from the State of California to the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management for additional wildland resources. The crew was planning to be pre-positioned in the Bakersfield area.

Whetstone Fire District reached out to Palominas seeking one additional firefighter to complete a full crew assignment, and Talon stepped up to fill that role. Interagency cooperation like this is made possible through the strong working relationships built between our organizations, and we are proud to support our partners when the need arises.

Palominas Fire is honored to assist wherever we can. Deployments such as this provide invaluable opportunities for our personnel to gain advanced wildland firefighting experience—skills that directly strengthen our capabilities here at home in Palominas.

At this evening's board meeting of the Palominas Fire District, Battalion Chief Wright from Sierra Vista Fire and Medical presented Justin McFarland a Palominas Fire District Firefighter/EMT with a plaque recognizing his heroic efforts at a major crash in Sierra Vista last month in Sierra Vista. Justin was off duty when he stopped to assist at a crash at Coronado and the Hwy 90 Bypass.

Firefighter McFarland assisted three people from a pickup that was on fire after the collision. Upon removing the three individual he then focused his efforts on treating other patients involved in the crash.

Firefighter McFarland is a solid example of service above self, exemplified through his unselfish actions.

On Saturday, April 26th, crews from Palominas Fire assisted Fry Fire District with a wildfire near the intersection of Hwy 92 and Emory Oak Ridge. Thanks to a rapid response from all units, the fire was contained quickly.

This incident is an important reminder that conditions are drying out fast. Even though local fire districts have not yet entered a formal burn ban, the fire risk is very real. If you plan to conduct any open burning, you must obtain a burn permit from the fire district in which you reside.

The Palominas Fire District also relies heavily on the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office and Cochise County Emergency Management to provide the most current information on fire status while our crews are actively engaged in suppression efforts.

We strongly encourage all residents to enroll in the Cochise County Emergency Management Emergency Notification System. This system provides timely updates on active incidents, including fire status and Ready – Set – Go evacuation notifications for areas that may be impacted.

🔥 C‑Shift Wildland Refresher Training Completed

On Friday, crews from C‑shift at the Palominas Fire District completed their annual wildland refresher training in preparation for this year’s wildfire season.

The day began with a three‑mile hike completed in 45 minutes, each firefighter carrying a 45‑lb weight vest. After the hike, crews moved into hands‑on skills training, including:

Fire shelter deployment

Mobile attack practice

Pump‑and‑roll operations

Drafting water from static sources such as pools, ponds, and other natural water supplies

This year’s fire activity has already started early, as many of you know from the recent pre‑season fire along the San Pedro River. Even so, Palominas Fire—alongside our local, state, and federal partners—remains fully prepared to respond with proactive fire prevention efforts and aggressive wildfire suppression.

As weather conditions continue to trend hotter and drier, we encourage everyone to stay tuned to our page. If these conditions persist, we may need to implement a burn ban earlier than usual.
