HEREFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE
MONDAY, MAY 4, 2026

On Monday, May 4th, 2026 at approximately 11:00 AM, officers from the Hereford Police Department attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a tan in color GMC pickup in the 400 block of Barrett St for failing to signal intent to turn and expired registration. The driver, later identified as Luis Alvarez, a 32-year-old male, fled from officers resulting in a vehicle pursuit. During the pursuit, Luis Alvarez attempted to elude officers, including officers from the Deaf Smith County Sheriff’s Office and Deaf Smith County Constable’s office, by driving through the John Pitman Municipal Golf Course, causing damage to the fencing and playable course area.
Prior to the pursuit concluding, Luis Alvarez threw a firearm, which was later recovered, out of the vehicle. Luis Alvarez then bailed out of the vehicle prior to it fully stopping and attempted to flee from officers on foot. After a short foot pursuit, Luis Alvarez was taken into custody for multiple criminal offenses including Evading arrest in a motor vehicle, unlawful carrying of a weapon, tampering with physical evidence and criminal mischief. Luis Alvarez was later transported via ambulance to Hereford Regional Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained during the incident.
This incident remains under investigation.

We can’t let this week pass without saying thank you to our 911 Dispatchers.

These individuals are the lifeline and backbone of not only our department but the Fire Department and EMS. They are the first ones you speak to when you ask for help and they are the one who coordinate where to send first responders when you call. The most amazing thing is they are usually always by themselves with no help.

Happy Telecommunications Week! Your service to the Hereford Community is often unknown but greatly appreciated!

On Monday, the Hereford Police Department joined the Bridge Children's Advocacy Center of Amarillo, and other advocacy groups, with a pinwheel ceremony. The Hereford Police
Department, along with other organizations, placed a pinwheel at the Hereford Aquatic Center Park. Each Pinwheel represents a child who told their story at The Bridge, regarding sexual and physical abuse.

We are thankful and honored to work with The Bridge. They provide a voice for our brave children who tell their story of abuse, and help our officers hold the suspects accountable and bring justice to the victims’ families.

Thank you to The Bridge for letting us be a part of your Pinwheel ceremony!

Attention: The Highway 60 Construction Project has officially begun. We expect significant traffic congestion and delays in that area, so please plan accordingly. The five-lane roadway has been reduced to two lanes. There are driveways marked to allow access to all businesses in the construction area, which currently stretches from the Tierra Blanca Bridge on the west side of town to Hwy 385. Please be safe and plan for delays when visiting that area. If you can avoid travel in that area, please do so. We will try to assist in traffic flow as we can and will update you with any changes.
