🚧 **ROAD CLOSURE NOTICE – MOHAWK STREET** 🚧

Mohawk Street will be temporarily closed at the NYS Thruway bridge near Tractor Supply beginning at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 2.

The closure is expected to last approximately one hour while the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) conducts a Flood Wall Drill at the bridge.

Motorists are asked to plan accordingly and use an alternate route during this time.

🚨PRESS RELEASE🚨

Herkimer Police Department - August 27, 2026

Herkimer Police Officer Struck by Vehicle; Driver Arrested for DWI

On August 26, 2026, at approximately 12:02 p.m., members of the Herkimer Police Department were assisting the New York State Police on Protection Avenue with an unrelated investigation involving a male suspect who had fled from a vehicle pursuit originating near the New York State Thruway.

Several marked Herkimer Police Department patrol vehicles were positioned along Protection Avenue with their emergency warning lights activated while officers worked at the scene.

While officers were standing near the patrol vehicles, they observed a blue SUV traveling northbound on Protection Avenue and approaching their location. The vehicle, operated by Aprile Lynch, 51, failed to keep left and traveled directly toward the officers and the marked patrol vehicles.

Recognizing the approaching vehicle, the Sgt. immediately warned another officer to move. The officer was able to move out of the direct path of the vehicle, but as the SUV passed, its passenger-side mirror struck the officer in the left upper arm/shoulder area.

Despite having just been struck, the officer immediately returned to his patrol vehicle, followed the SUV, and conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle.

During the subsequent investigation, Lynch was determined to be intoxicated and was taken into custody for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).

Thankfully, the officer did not sustain any significant injury as a result of the collision.

This incident could have resulted in a far more serious outcome. The Herkimer Police Department reminds motorists to remain alert when approaching emergency vehicles and personnel working along the roadway, slow down, and provide adequate space whenever possible.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

🚨🚨UPDATE🚨🚨

The Herkimer Police Department has arrested Fonta Young, 43, of Herkimer, in connection with the larcenies that occurred on August 19 and August 20.

Young was charged with two counts of Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree and four counts of Petit Larceny.

Young was remanded to the Herkimer County Correctional Facility without bail pursuant to NYS CPL § 530.20(2)(a).

This investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges are pending.

The Herkimer Police Department would like to thank the community for its assistance in identifying those involved and helping bring these incidents to a resolution.

🚨 COMMUNITY ALERT – VEHICLE LARCENIES 🚨

The Herkimer Police Department is notifying residents that we have recently experienced several reports of vehicle larcenies throughout the Village of Herkimer.

We are asking all residents to remain vigilant and take a few simple precautions to help prevent becoming a victim:

🔒 LOCK YOUR VEHICLE — Always lock your vehicle when it is unattended, even if you are only going inside for a short period of time.

🪟 CLOSE ALL WINDOWS — Make sure all windows and sunroofs are completely closed when leaving your vehicle unattended.

🚫 DO NOT LEAVE VALUABLES INSIDE — Remove cash, electronics, fi****ms, bags, or other valuables from your vehicle. Items left in plain view can make your vehicle an easy target.

🔑 SECURE YOUR KEYS — Never leave your keys or key fob inside an unattended vehicle.

💡 PARK IN WELL-LIT AREAS — Whenever possible, park in locations that are well-lit and visible.

👀 REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY — If you observe suspicious persons, vehicles, or activity in your neighborhood, please report it to the Herkimer Police Department. Do not confront anyone you believe may be involved.

Many vehicle larcenies are crimes of opportunity. Taking a few extra seconds to lock your vehicle and secure your belongings can make a significant difference.
