There is something quietly magical about mornings at the Herzog Mansion.

Maybe it’s the church bells. Maybe it’s the birds. Perhaps it is the breeze from the Missouri River. Maybe it is just Hermann itself.

Hermann, Missouri is one of the most beautiful little German towns in America. If you ever have the opportunity, put a cool weekend here on your bucket list.

Slow down. Wander the streets. Sit on a porch with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine in the evening. I think you’ll understand why so many people fall in love with this little river town.

If you’re fortunate enough to call Hermann home, it’s one of life’s greatest privileges.

There is a warmth here that is difficult to put into words. Neighbors know one another. People check in on each other. When someone is in need, the community comes together.

It feels like an idyllic picture of the past that still exists in the present. A place where life moves a little slower and people genuinely care for one another.

I don’t take a single morning here for granted. ❤️

🤍 Attention lovers of history!! 🤍

The Herzog Mansion needs your help.

You or someone you know may have the photograph that helps restore one of Hermann’s most special buildings.

For a home as significant as the Herzog Mansion, it is heartbreaking how much of its photographic history has been lost. 📷

We are especially searching for:

• Any photographs before 1916. (We currently have none.)

• Any photographs from 1935 through 1989. (We currently have none.)

We’re looking for interior photos, exterior photos, family gatherings, snapshots, or even pictures of other things where the mansion simply appears in the background.

These photographs will help guide the restoration of lost architectural features and support an important preservation project in the works with the State of Missouri!

Every contributing photograph will be credited appropriately on our website, our restoration blog, and within the project documentation. ❤️

Digital scans are welcome. If you only have original photographs, we will carefully scan them and promptly return every one.

History cannot be restored from stories and memories alone. It must be preserved for the generations to come through photographs and official documentation.

We have searched heavily in the Missouri Digital Archives, the National Archives, and have visited the Gasconade County Archives. These resources have already been exhausted.

Legacy Requires Endurance

In late 2019, Michael and I made a decision that most people could not understand.

We bought the Herzog Mansion.

We didn’t purchase a starter home.
Not an investment property.
Not a stepping stone.

The Herzog Mansion is our forever family home.

When we moved in, people were confused.

“Are you opening a bed and breakfast?”
“Why would your first home be such a massive project?”
“Why would anyone take this on?”

They could not see what we saw and many still cannot.

The bones were so unique.
The location was idyllic.
The history was incredible and largely undocumented!

She simply needed someone willing to stay. ❤️

The roof required a complete historic slate replacement. Rooms that had once served as reception halls had to become a family space again. Every room, every window, every detail demands real time, real money and a vision that honors the Herzog family.

We would choose the Herzog Mansion again every single time. Not just the Herzog, but the town and people of Hermann.

Long before I had children, long before I met Michael, I knew exactly what I wanted.

To find my historic Victorian forever home.
To put down roots and become a steward of something worth preserving.
To leave a landmark on this earth better than I found it.

Sometimes I ask myself a simple question:

If we had a billion-dollar exit…
If I won the lottery tomorrow…
Where would I go?

I would stay right here.

In Hermann, Missouri.
In the Herzog Mansion.
The answer will always be the same.
It doesn’t get any better than this.

I just want to say, even if it falls on deaf ears, thank you to all the wonderful people who make Hermann Missouri one of the best places to live in the world. ❤️ Every family that lives here is so fortunate to call this one of a kind community home.

When we bought the Herzog Mansion, one family member took one look at the south side and said, "I'd have nightmares." He wasn’t wrong.

Years of Missouri sun and poorly managed water had taken a serious toll on this all-wood addition. In Part 1 of our south-side restoration, we share how we redirected the water, repaired the rot, and saved as much of the existing wood as possible.

The addition is finally watertight, and the nightmares are becoming fewer. 😅
