In late May and early June 2020, a group of outside agitators entered our community with the intent to sow division and create fear. At that time, I reacted passionately because what I saw did not line up with the Hermiston that I know and love. My June 3, 2020, tweet was wrong and inappropriate, and for that, I am truly sorry. That experience taught me that social media is not the way to heal a community; action is. That is why I am proud to have dedicated my life to connecting low-income families to crucial medical and social services, and honored to serve on the school district budget committee and that was instrumental in helping prioritize facility projects. Thanks to the work of that committee and local voters, we were able to pass a school bond that helped replace Rocky Heights, build Loma Vista, expand the capacity of the high school, and provide safety and security upgrades district-wide. Hermiston is an incredible place with brilliant, caring, and hard-working people. Our vibrant, beautiful community will continue to thrive with positive action.

The school board is a non-partisan board of community members that is focused solely on its stated goals.

1. Academic Achievement. Demonstrate continuous improvement in all measured areas for each student.
2. Stewardship. Maintain sound fiscal stewardship of community resources consistent with board policy.
3. Community. Engage our diverse community in creating opportunities to advance student achievement.

When I became aware of the page that was created to attack me personally and fan the flames of division, I wanted to do everything I could to stop that from happening. Negative attacks and mudsling do not serve our community or our students. I have learned that, and I stand by the position that the best way to better your community is step-up and take positive action.

I do not know who is behind the page. Everyone that I have spoken to about my experience, qualifications, and goals for running for School Board has been incredibly positive. Knowing that Hermiston is a place of good, hard-working people, I can only imagine that this might be an outside agitator attempting to distract from the real issues of supporting our students and community. The Hermiston that I know and love values collaborative discourse, not hatred and attacks.

I appreciate the opportunity to run for this position and hope to serve Hermiston as a school board member. I am proud to be a Hermiston resident. It has been exciting to see the growth and development of Hermiston. I was raised in this community, attended Hermiston schools K-12, and returned to the community after college.

As a community leader, I am very involved within various sectors in the community. At a county level I am a founding member, and continue to serve, as a board member of a grassroots organization, Raices. I also have experience leading at a county level through my role as Public Health Director for Morrow County in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. At a city level I served on the Hispanic Advisory Committee that provides input for the Hermiston City Council. I also serve as a member of the Hermiston Cinco de Mayo Committee, the committee that is in charge of putting on the annual community celebration.

I would also like to highlight my experience with the Hermiston School District. I have served on the budget committee since 2019. I was also a part of the Long Range Facility Planning Committee for the school district. This committee was in charge of planning and prioritizing facility projects. Ultimately this committee provided a list of projects that were considered a priority and that were included in the successful Hermiston School Bond Measure 30-130.

I have proven to be a strong community leader and would like the opportunity to serve as a member of the Hermiston School Board to have a voice and assist in the growth of our school district. I feel truly blessed to be a part of this community and I would like to have the opportunity to continue to contribute in a meaningful way.
